United Health Insurance-does it cover CPM Homebirth?

Hi Ladies,

I'm living in Virginia right now and wanting to move to Vermont. There is a possibility that we'll be here for longer than we wanted so I'm doing some research on the CPMs in my area. We want to homebirth (waterbirth specifically) and it's legal in Virginia to have a CPM attended homebirth (since July 2005), but I don't know if my insurance company will cover it. I know that this has been discussed many times over so if there is a thread that you can direct me to that will be great also. DH and I are looking to start ttc in a couple of months and I just want to have things put together a little bit like insurance coverage because that may determine whether we use a CPM like we want or a CNM at home with no waterbirth. Any advice would be great.

Thanks,

Kemi

I used to work for UHC and actually every plan in specifically designed by the employer. The only way to find out if they cover it is to call the customer service dept. and ask what your policy states.

My midwives said that United is one of their favorite companies to deal with. They said they always pay promptly without any kind of problems or red tape.

Have you gone to their website: http://www.myuhc.com
I can go there and login (after first registering, I think) and see everything about our coverage, including deductibles and coverage. I couldn't find ANYTHING there about midwives and homebirth, so I called customer service, but they didn't know anything either. So I just sent the info. on to the midwives and am hoping their billing person can sort it all out.

Oh, and one of my midwives is a CPM and they bill through her name because of that (the other is a DEM).

Good luck!

I have United Healthcare PPO and they covered a little more than half of my homebirth with a CPM in CA.

Thanks ladies!!! This really helps. I did speak with a customer service representative who said that they do cover midwives that are legally practicing in the state and that includes CPMs! I have a PPO program (thank goodness) and they also cover chiropractic care as well so I'm in business. All we have to do is chart a couple more cycles and see how we can maximize our chances of getting pregnant in not a lot of time. I'll keep you all informed of what we do.

Thanks!
