I prefer LOTR to The Hobbit (although I've read The Hobbit a bazillion times too - but it is, after all, a children's book), and actually really love The Silmarillion too - lovely, lyrical prose. And some great stories. Beren and Luthien, Melian -- much more about Galadriel. And of course, Beleg Strong-Bow. Wow. It can be a bit confusing the first time through the book though, lots of family trees and things (a bit like reading the Old Testament actually ). And one of my favorite short stories of all time is "Leaf by Niggle," another Tolkien work, which is more "modern" in setting. But I digress ....!
The Lord of the Rings for me too. I've even read several volumes of the HoME - the History of Middle-Earth which are Tolkien's notes/drafts. How nerdy am I?

Another Lord of the Rings fan here. I read the whole trilogy over about once a year, and every time I read it I enjoy it more. I've read a LOT of really great books in my life-- I'm a serious reader-- but nothing beats LOTR.

I've read LOTR once--my DH and I read them aloud to each other. Before kids of course

NO way to answer this with one book. So I may post in the future. But to start...

Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns.
And thanks to the PP mentioning The Confederacy of Dunces I forgot about it. After I finish my current read I am rereading that one. The characters were excellent.
