Slightly OT: Do the Amish breastfeed in public?

I'm getting my meats and dairy from an Amish farm. I'm wondering if they would be weirded out if I nurse my 9 month old while I'm there. Anyone have any experience with this?

nak. mine had no problem with me bfing my babe, even an older babe. she nursed her children until 2 yrs. or so. you could ask if they mind, if you are really concerned about it.

I can't imagine they'd have a problem with it. The Amish are pretty sheltered from Western Society's sexualization of breasts.

I'm glad to see that you are alive and posting today Suzy.

That's true, ruthla, but they are very conservative, and not super open about public nakedness. I've had some very private discussions with my Amish friend (woman, not man), and she wasn't comfortable discussing certain body parts by their proper names. I suspect that some things just aren't discussed frankly, iykwim.

I think I might assume that the men wouldn't want a public display type of nursing situation. You might just say, my son/daughter is hungry, is there somewhere that I can nurse him/her privately?

I am guessing it is probably okay in same sex company, but not in front of men - esp since you are an "outsider." I wonder how amish moms breastfeed, do their tops have special nursing holes?

Do they just cover up with a blanket when nursing? I would think as long as you cover up they would be okay but JMO, never been around any Amish.

Amish dresses are double layered, and can have nursing slits in them. Most Amish women that I know wean around the age of one by personal preference.

If your concernd about their comfort, ask if there's a place you can nurse the baby if there's men around. If you don't want to talk about it, nurse with a sling. They realize 'English' women do things differently, and aren't likely to say anything to you either way.
