She's just teasing us! I want to read the book NOW! Who dies?? Does she let Harry live???
DANG!!! A whole year until we get to read it!!!! Noooooooo!!!!

I still say she'll let Harry live. The HP series is a children's series after all and I don't think she'll break millions of little hearts like that. Let's hope anyway!

Ds and I read this lastnight! Wow. So hard to lose a beloved character. Ron's always been my fave, but it would be awful for Harry to go.

Please put something more vague in your title and include the word spoiler. THanks.

Um, this isn't a spoiler. Its something the author has chosen to make common knowledge a year before the book comes out.

I think she's hinting at Harry's death just to drive everybody nuts. Honestly, do you think she'd kill off her main character?

Already answered in another thread, but yes, I do. It would be a way of making sure that her goal of only seven books in the series was preserved. Plus, millions of people have laid down their lives before for what they believe in. That's not necessarily a bad message to send to children. That there are things worth fighting for and that if you believe in something strongly enough, to take a stand against it.

Or maybe I just see that because while HP started off as a children's series, the series has matured over time. I have read the first two books to my children but will not continue until I am sure that they are old enough to comprehend the knowledge behind the words.

Er...sorry. But the same title was on the MSN front page as well, and on the Salon.com front page, and someone said it was on the news. I think it would difficult to avoid. I don't want a true spoiler any more than the next guy...

Honestly, this isn't definitive at all, in my opinion. It could be any character.

Shocked and appalled by your spoiling, HappiLeigh.

I aspire to be the last living person who has never read Harry Potter. No real reason, I just seem to be one of the leading contenders.

And when I oh-so-politely change my thread title, someone else does it again anyway!

But seriously, I think you should jump on the bandwagon Penelope. DD will want to read them in a few years. Or if you really end up as the last living person not to read them, I'll make you a certificate for holding out and you can mail it to your mother.

Bwwaah!

No, my mother is devoted to HP. It fits with her current anti-fundamentalist bent, which is a mile wide and an inch deep. (She knows a couple of families who won't let their kids read HP because it conflicts with their incredibly restrictive religious practices.)

Maybe I can read them to dd when we finish re-reading the current Narnia...

Oh, eta that I totally misread you there. You're hysterical!

I know this is off-subject but it bugs me when people assume most Christians don't let their kids read the books because they're uptight and their religion is so restrictive. As a Christian, I've chosen not to read the books to my kids and I won't let them read the books until they're much older for several reasons. For one, the language. I don't want my kids learning some of the words in there until they're much older. And because the kids just aren't very nice to each other sometimes and call each other names. Something else I don't want my kids picking up.

I know I'll probably get flamed for this. But someone not allowing their kids to read something because they don't approve of it isn't always a bad thing. I just get tired of anyone who is remotely religious around here being slammed for their beliefs.

And for what it's worth I've read all the books and seen the movies numerous times. DH and I enjoy them. But we won't let our kids read them or see the movies for a long long time.

Stayseeliz, I'm Christian. I'm actually getting a Ph.D in theology, so I'm even a well-read Christian, despite my omission of HP.

My comments about my mom are somewhat tongue-in-cheek - she's a little nuts about "fundamentalists" and I don't agree with a lot of what she thinks (hence the mile wide, inch deep comment.)

But her specific experience with the specific families does actually involve very restrictive religious practices, and that's why they ban HP. I think she's accurate in reporting that to me. I don't think it's correct of her to extrapolate from those experiences and make claims about what all "fundamentalists" do... but that's a long-standing argument between me and my mother.

It's also wrong for you to assume that I was talking about "most Christians" and to assume that I'm not Christian (I am, and so is HappiLeigh, and so is my mother, fwiw.)

If you're tired of people getting slammed for religious beliefs, spend more time in the Spirituality forum! Lots of support and constructive conversation there.

Sorry Penelope. I took what you said wrong. I guess I just assumed you thought everyone that doesn't let their kids read HP had restrictive religious beliefs. I've just gotten a lot of grief around here for my conservative beliefs. And my not wanting my kids to read HP until they're older doesn't have anything to do with religion. It's the behavioral aspect of it, you know?

Sorry I jumped to conclusions. AF is coming for a visit and I'm a little testy..Sorry..

Good for you for getting a theology degree! DH and I met in seminary and it was one of the best times of my life!

No problem.

Back on topic... I think that Jo is trying to drive people crazy, but she said two characters will die. She didn't neccessarily mean main characters. Not to split hairs but I'm thinking that one character will likely be somebody that's not quite as crucial to the story as Harry. And heaven, I hope she doesn't kill Harry. I bet she kills off Percy though. It'd make a good point about loving your family no matter what you think of them. JMHO!

Percy! I was trying to think of his name when I posted in the other thread. I agree. I can totally see Percy getting the axe. (And would we really be all that sad? )

I've always thought he'd get it in the end!!
I think ROn and Hermione get it in the end. That would leave him the same place he started at in the beginning. Without a "family" to call his own.
