JKR's interview about HP Book 7 - Two shall die

"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly," she said in a rare live interview on British TV. "One character got a reprieve, but I have to say two die that I did not intend to die."

When asked whether the characters were "much loved", she replied: "A price has to be paid; we are dealing with pure evil here.

"They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters. Well I do."

""I've never been tempted to kill him (Harry) off before the end of book seven, because I always planned seven books and that's where I want to go," she said.

"I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks: 'Well, I'm going to kill them off because that means there can be no non-author-written sequels … so it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character."
Who do you think the two are? Do you think one of them is Harry?

I posted on the other thread about this as well. I honestly don't think she'll kill Harry. This is a children's series first and foremost. I think it would devestate millions of children if Harry died. He's looked up to as an icon and an avenger of evil. I really don't think she's kill him when all is said and done.

I just hope the trio survives. And Ginny!!!

My DH keeps throwing out random character names just to upset me! I'm in the boat that thinks Neville is who the prophecy was really about. I'm actually hoping it's Voldy and Harry who go. To me the perfect ending would be Vold. taking out Harry. Then the remainder of the DA (with Snape's help) take of Vold. Totally unimaginative, but, to me that would be a nice neat package.

You want Harry to die??????????? I've never heard anyone say they want him to die!!

I for one will be devestated if he dies. I know there will be major casualties and I can see some of the Weasley klan being killed off. But I really and truly hope the trio and Ginny survives!

Me and a friend were just talking about this on MSN!

Her and I both have a thought that Snape might be one to go. I'm thinking maybe Hagrid or one of the Weasley's (though hopefully not Ron!) Possibly Remus? I dunno. I just want the trio to live in the vain hope that she'll maybe write a few more books about them after school or something.

A girl can hope, cant' she?

Jo shot down this rumor during an interview. She says that the prophecy has nothing to do with Neville.

OOOO... I'm actually surprised it's only two... considering how many died the last time V came to power.

I seriously doubt she would kill Harry... as a pp said, he is an icon for good vs. evil!!

I think it's only two main characters - I bet we'll lose a lot of periferal characters.

Anybody think Jo will authorize spin-off series? There were several series based on the Little House books. I wouldn't mind seeing something like that set at Hogwarts.

Guess that I am alone but I really think that Harry might be one of the two to die. Mainly because JK seems set on there being ONLY seven books and this way, millions of people couldn't boycott for more HP books.

I really cannot see Ron or Hermoine being killed. From one of the interviews, I read that someone ends up teaching at Hogwarts but not who you would expect. I took that to mean either Ron or Neville since Hermoine would be the obvious choice.

As for the possibility of it being one of the Weasley clan.....both Charlie and Bill are already in the Order. I can see it easily being either but I wouldn't call either a main character.

It wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was Pettigrew or Lupin either. Since the rest of that little gang has been killed, I can see the last two falling as well.

Voldemort seems a natural too but I am not sure that he would be included in the "two shall die" theory. Only because if the series is ending, you would figure that the good guy would eventually triumph.

I will be heartbroken if its Hagrid. I barely survived the loss of Dumbledore. I don't want it to be Hagrid.

I guess that it would depend on who you consider to be the main characters of the series. For me, that would be the trio, Ginny, Hagrid, Snape, Malfoy and Voldemort.

I don't want Harry to die, but, I don't want another author to take him over. Remember the horrible Gone With the Wind sequel Scarlett? I feel that if she let's the main character live someone down the road could come in and ruin a perfectly good character.

I see the point in that. But I think it doesn't hold water to come extent. What she writes is canon. That's what's real. People are probably going to be writing fanfiction for the next 100 year for HP and the gang. Killing him off won't make a difference to them. They'll ressurect him and keep on going!

She didn't actually say "only two will die" or "two main characters will die", she said two she didn't expect to die will be killed. So she might have already killed Harry, Snape, Voldemort and Hagrid off, given Hagrid a reprieve then decided to kill another two characters.

: Although I agree with the poster who says JKR's words will always be canon. That said, I think *if* she kills of Harry (and I hope not ), she'll kill off Ginny too. But I think good possibilities are Lupin or Hagrid. And I agree with PP who said we'll probably lose other less important characters too. For some reason I wouldn't be surprised if Hermione's muggle parents didn't end up as random casualties, because it would be so easy to get them and it would really hurt Hermione. But I don't want anyone to die...it's bad enough I'm going to completely neglect my daughter for the duration of time it takes to read the book, and then how awful for some of those book characters to die while I'm doing it!
