questions about water kefir grains

If I'm storing my grains for a while, does it matter whether I use rapadura or the cheap white sugar for storage?

Also, is there any benefit to eating the water kefir grains? The diet I'm on right now doesn't allow dairy, juice, or sugar, but I was thinking that since the grains grow while in storage, maybe I could eat some of the grains and get some benefit from them that way.

I would use the white sugar. And I would eat the grains. I haven't seen any research on it, but why not.
