Canadian mamas ~ Vit K ?

I asked my midwife if she'd be willing to administer vit K orally versus IM. She said she had never done it for any clients before but would be happy to do so for me. I know that three doses are required but I'd prefer to reduce the amount of post birth trauma for Sam. All the info I've found is that it has to be the IM formulation delivered orally. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this and could maybe direct me to somewhere where I can find better information. The midwife left it in my hands to figure out how to obtain the oral prep if it's available (that doesn't bother me at all though...it just feeds my net addiction )

Cool question. I will ask my mw about this on Thursday if I get to that appt. I would rather not have a needle in baby either.

Popping by from the August DDC...

Just want to add that my midwife-mentor in Australia wonders whether giving it orally might actually be more disruptive to babe than IM (if the parent chooses to give Vit K at all). Since it's the same preparation as the IM, it tastes horrid & babies really fight it. She thinks it might be better to just do the one IM dose & be done w/ it.

Just wanted to throw that out there...

My CBE and now Doula, strongly advised against doing the Vit K orally. Something about it being not as effective, and that it is more traumatic for the baby. I originally wanted to do the Vit K orally as well, but she stated that it was the one thing that she would actually let them inject.

injected or orally, it's totally unnecessary and why risk it when it's been linked to childhood cancers and leukemia.
