Upromise.com credit card rewards site?

Has anybody used this? They put 1-3% of credit card purchases into a 529 college savings account for your kids. Is it worth it, after the account fees etc.?

I expect you'd have to put a lot on your credit cards to make it worthwhile, which is exactly what many of us are trying NOT to do, but...if you're very careful and don't pay any interest (that is, pay all cards off every month), the rewards programs offered by many cards can be occasionally helpful. Given that they're mostly designed to get you to use the cards more, though, they can also be very dangerous. (Hey, it doesn't matter that I spent $120 on a pair of shoes and another $10 in credit card interest on that purchase--$1.20 went into my 'rewards' account and I got 60 frequent flier miles!)

And I bet there are FREE 529 savings accounts out there that would be much smarter to put your money into...

any opinions? You'd also be signing up for an incredible junk mail increase too. (though you can 'opt out' of some of it)

We signed up a few years back but no longer are involved. Basically what I found was that you got credit for purchasing particular items and we did not ever purchase those items because they did not fit into our shopping/ideals. I haven't checked recently but they did not have organic items or natural items on the list- mostly things that were full or food dyes, pesticides, chemicals, etc.

My mainstream BIL/SIL have them for their girls, I've never looked into it, but they recomended it. They said it's not much, and they don't shop any certain way for extra points but they figure a little bit going in every once in a while is worth it.

I think the PP is asking about the Upromise Credit Card, not just the upromise account - the credit card is like a rewards card which gives you 1% cash back on all purchases and more on certian partner stores purchases - versus the grocery rewards whihc give you a few cents if you buy specific purchases.

Anyway, I don't have one, but I just thought I'd clarify that. I don't know if its worth it since there are so many no fee rewards cards out there. (we have amazon card and an amex which both equate to 1% cash back, no fees) I would only do it if you frequently purchase items that would give you the over 1% to the account - if you think you would average 2% back because of your purcahsing habits AND that amount is significantly more than the fees you would pay, then I'd say sure, but otherwise I think there are better options out there.

Just to clarify for everybody there are 3 parts of the Upromise program being discussed here:

1 Upromise credit card which you are rewarded for using

2 Upromise partner brands which you are rewarded for buying

3 Your other credit/debit card which you can register at Upromise to be rewarded for using

DH travels for work. He puts travel expenses on the Upromise card, also all groceries, gas, etc. We max out the program every year. (about $600 + per year!)
