Record albums? Do you still listen to them?

We have decided to get a turntable! Are we the only ones who will have one?
We have been picking up records for super cheap, and hope to find a turntable this weekend.

We got one for Christmas (we had one before that but it was really old and not working well). It's one of those that has a radio, tape player, cd player, and record player all in one. I love it! My mom and dad have given me all of their old records, so I listen to it all the time! I've found tons of records and thrift stores that are in really good condition. I bought some the other week 5 for $1.00 (I got 15 total . So, no, you're not the only one! Enjoy listening!

We have a pretty big record collection and prefer listening to it over CD - the sound is better on records.

Just a heads up: you don't have to stick to old artists/albums. Most every current artist (especially indie ones) still put out all their stuff on vinyl. Our collection is a good mix of new stuff and 70s stuff. Find a great record store near you and keep checking in. The stock is always turning over. The two near us are just amazing.

Oh yeah baby!! We have hundreds and hundreds of records. Like a PP stated, it's not just old stuff--you can get lots of new stuff on vinyl. I suggest www.insound.com for the indie stuff. Pretty much all R&B & hip hop is available too, you know, for the DJ's.

Funny you should mention this now...
My dad and step-mom are moving to Maui, so they are getting rid of most of their stuff. My dad just gave me two big boxes of records, and will be giving me too more. I was THRILLED, just ecstatic-- the problem? I have no record player! Some of these I am going to sell off (he doesn't care) because I doubt I'd ever listen to them & we could use a few extra dollars, but HOLY CRAP there was some coooool old albums in there. Dude, Pink Floyd! 'nough said.

So... I know nothing about record players. Is there anything in particular I should look for/watch out for? Or is whatever cheapie I find going to be just the same (esp to someone who hasn't ever had a record player before)?

I go for the very manual, very basic type of turntable. Fancy stuff breaks too easily and is too expensive to repair. The actual record player doesn't matter much--just get a good needle and good speakers and you'll be set.

I still have the turntable from my stereo system I got as a high school graduation present in '88 (the cd player played out years ago, but I'm still spinning records). The tape player rarely gets used. The speakers are top notch, but the reciever causes the sound to crackle.

DH and I have a large collection of classic rock on vinyl, and we're always on the lookout for more stuff on the cheap. We tend to listen more to music on our imac, which holds our entire cd collection. We only got the imac a few weeks ago, and we're listening to music we have ignored for years. Loving, loving, loving our imac!

We have a record collection that is nearing the 4k mark (any idea how heavy 4000 records are?) --lots of older stuff, but oodles of cool new stuff, too!

I bought DH one last year for Christmas. He loves going to record shops and searching for a great find. It is a treasure hunt for him. Ours sounds great but I think we might need a new needle. Does anyone know where to get one? Can I do it myself?

You might try to find a needle/stylus at your local Radio Shack, and yes, you will be able to do it yourself.

I have purchased needles & dust jackets from

http://www.needledoctor.com/

They've always been great and have excellent customer service.
