Introducing
Lyle Terry
born June 24, 2006
10:55 pm
7 lbs. 15 oz.
20 inches long
We had a fast and dramatic labor. Saturday evening with no warning at all, my water broke and suddenly I was having very strong contractions very close together (started 4 mins apart, got to 3 mins apart within just a few minutes) and felt like I needed to push. We got to the birth center 1.5 hours after my water had broken; the head was already visible.
I had some trouble pushing him out, however, because he was turned sideways and had an arm up by his face. It took two more hours of pushing before his head was finally born, and with it, a loop of umbilical cord. Unfortunately his shoulder got stuck behind my pelvis (shoulder dystocia), a potentially very serious complication (because the oxygen is cut off). A team of NICU peds raced in; the midwife had to pull his shoulder out of me. At that point he'd been without oxygen for 2 minutes.
He was purple and not responding well. They raced him to the NICU, and by the time they got there, he'd pinked up and started breathing on his own. They did a few tests but determined really quickly that he was perfectly fine and had no damage from the dystocia. We got really lucky--I learned later that dystocia can result in a number of v. serious consequences, including being fatal.
Total time in labor: under 4 hours. Drug-free. He's beautiful. We've had him for six days and it feels like no time at all has passed since that night.
Oh yeah...and I've made a photoblog for him, if you're interested in pics.
I'll be posting a new photo from each day of his life at:
