Today's nurse-in: How did it go??????? - Page 6

My DD and I attended Lakeside Mall today. Unforunately, she hasn't NIPed in about two years but we did turn out today to show our support. Like someone else mentioned, I did make a point of asking each sales associate if they had nursing bras and only had one person comment (wanted to know if I was pg and thinking about bfing since my dd is obviously too old to be nursing still : )

I saw one other mama there nursing her baby in a sling (pretty impressive since I rarely see anything like that around here) but like I said, we didn't get the chance to stay long. Either way, I am really proud of myself for showing up and lending my support. I just wish that I would have planned enough to have remembered to bring some kind of literature with me and a camera.

: I am so proud of all of you, the moms who nursed alone and felt unsure and weird, the moms in groups who felt confident, and everyone in between!

I'm so happy for all of you, I could cry, Everyone here is weaned but I was with you in spirit!!! :

It wasn't an enormous success in Los Angeles.

I arrived at The Grove in Los Angeles a little bit late and I believe I was the only one there, but it was a little hard to tell.

It was a MADHOUSE there, totally crammed with shoppers. There were several women there with babies, but none together, and definitely none nursing.

DD was fast asleep in the stroller, as well, so I didn't wake her to nurse her.

Kudos to all the nursin' mamas around the country!

Ithaca, NY

Well, there were two of us in Ithaca, NY (a little surprising considering the town, but maybe they figure the word is already out there ). Anyhoo, we latched on the kiddos (one 3 month old and a 14 month old) and wandered around the store.

Before I left, my dad joked that I shouldn't get arrested. Afterwards I joked, "Arrested! We couldn't even get noticed." No one said anything to us, although I didn't see the sales associates really talking to anoyone. I didn't bring a press release, nor did I speak to the manager. But it did seem like we were being ignored. However, the best thing to come out of our 30 minutes there was that most of the sales associates and almost everyone in the store was about 18-20 years old, so hopefully they got a glimpse of how you can NIP, hands free with the babe in a sling, and shop for underwear at the same time.

Thanks for letting us be a part of something important.

I thought, oh man they are waiting for us...

I went back outside and approached a mother that was just standing there with her 2 kids and asked if she was waiting to join a nurse in.. Sadly she was looking for her lost little boy (9yrs old) I got a description and promised to keep an eye out for him, as mall security came up to help her.

One by one the momma's started showing up.. I gave them the desciption of the lost boy... We waited for everyone to gather outside the store.

We had 6 moms, 3 Daddies(one who took the day off just to attend!)
and 8 babies & toddlers! One baby was only 3 weeks old, homebirthed and not even named yet! SO sweet & little!!!!!
Another mom and I had collected the free panty coupons and we handed them out to the others.

Then we all went into VS, about 1:15 in a group ...asked where the free panties were, then plopped ourselves right down in front of the display. VS was ready for us... they did not harrass us, or ask us to leave. One asked our member Diana if she would like a dressing room and she told them she was comfortable right where she was. We were told though, that picture taking was *NOT ALLOWED* in the store, but that was after Diana's husband already took 2 pics...

My baby(14mos) was kinda too distracted to nurse for long while I was sitting on the floor, so I followed the lead of one tandem nursing momma, and sat her on a display table, stood in front of her and let her latch on that way... so she was nursing and pulling on a g-string on the manequin next to her! Hillarious! ...

When we were done, we took more pics outside the store, then some of us went back in to get our free panties. They asked if wanted the $10off sports bra and I informed them they need to carry larger sizes & nursing bras.(I went from a 36c to a 36f due to nursing) Then I told her it was guaranteed that they will go back down after baby decides she no longer wants to nurse, then I could shop there... lol.. she kinda looked at me strange... lol

It was nice to meet other nursing mother's from the community.
SO... I think it was a success... simply because it was obvious VS Corporate was aware of this Nationwide nurse in and notified their stores accordingly... the employees barley batted an eye at us and just let us do our thing.

I will try to post pics as soon as I can.

No Media showed up... I had contacted the local paper and the cbs news.

Sorry you didn't make it EVC.. I hope I meet you some other time!
Here is the link for the AP group I co-organise if you want to join....

We don't have set days and times for playdates.. we are 2 working moms that organise it so we are really flexible and try to do things when it's conveinient for others.
I am so bummed I didn't make it--my ride cancelled on me and I wasn't able to find another : I'm definitely iinterested in the playgroup--where do you generally meet? I don't drive which makes my life difficult (for example today).

I'm so glad it was a success, though

BTW, did the mama find her lost boy?

Seven of us at Fashion Square in Scottsdale, AZ

We got lots of attention from the mall security guard who stood 15 feet away almost the entire time we were there, staring and talking into his phone. A second security guard arrived a little later. I would say overall, the reception was not warm, but we all had a great time nursing and chatting! Ironically we were sitting under a huge life size sign (in neighboring store's window) of a wet, naked woman, her nipples covered by a few strands of wet hair placed strategically!

Went to my local VS (as posted in another thread) but I was the only one who showed.

Just me and baby. Disappointing. I am so glad other cities had such great turn outs.

I was at the Holyoke, MA nurse-in with Gret the Great and others (I met Gret a few months back in the Boston demonstration!)

It was really pretty tame...I don't think the other shoppers noticed us or cared

When we left I could definitely see the clerks giving each other knowing "Yay! The Hippies are leaving!" looks

Oh, we left some breastmilk behind too; one mama's son spit up right after her feeding, and my dd pulled off mid let down and refused to latch on for a moment, so I sprayed the floor pretty copiously, unfortunately

I was at the Mall of America and there weren't that many of us considering how many I thought were coming! There were 6 mamas and 2 dads (one of which had on a shirt that said BREASTFEEDING SUPPORTER!) and a ton of kids.. Some went into the store and handed out pamplets and they were expecting us (from the sounds of it) and were very nice. They kept an eye on us, and then we all went home. I am not sure, but I think that there were mama's at the other malls too.

I have a little more time to post about our nurse-in. We had 14 or 15 moms plus one dad there. A lot of us belong to a mom's group, and one of our members came just to show support. The only contact we had with the VS employees was at the beginning. Another mom and I went into the store to tell them we were there and gave the salesgirl a few copies I had made of the press release, with our state's breastfeeding law on the top of the page. The salesgirl was clueless. She had no idea what I was talking about.

I felt pretty good about the whole thing today. No one had contacted the media, but I feel like we were definitely noticed. We were spread out in front of the store. My ds only nursed twice for less than a minute each time, but plenty of the moms got some good nursing time in.

Plenty of people stopped and asked why we were there. It was great. People on the upper level were watching us from above. As far as I know, there was only one negative encounter. A customer came out of the VS store and approached one of the moms in our group and said something to the effect of, "I nursed my daughter for nine months, but I think you should cover up." It was not a pleasant conversation from what I was told.

For a good part of the time we were there, I was standing at the end of the group and the flow of mall traffic was coming towards me, so I was able to see everyone's expressions as they passed our group. A lot of people looked away in what appeared to be disgust. I was shocked. I cannot really say that I've ever felt that anyone has looked at me nursing any of my kids with looks like these people were giving us. So, maybe one nursing mom is okay, but they cannot handle a league of lactators. Ha ha.

Anyway, I thought we accomplished a lot just by talking to all of the people who stopped and asked what was going on. Some people even took pictures of us.

Here are more of our pictures.

all you mamas who did this are awesome! I could not be there but I am so proud of all of you! I think its funny how in the pics I noticed all you mamas nursing not showing anything but the displays had some pretty racey things on those dummies. DH noticed that too. Strange universe.
I just spent a few minutes tallying up how many mamas showed support for this nurse-in... a total of 369 thus far. That is a big deal!
