Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm happy to be here. I can give you some background on our family when it comes to schooling. Our oldest son has chemical sensitivity, and was so sensitive to so many things, that we schooled him without school, books, or ink. I remember showing him basic math with a stick in the dirt, and showing him phonics flashcards from across the room. My dh would trace out the mathbooks by hand onto paper and pencil so ds could do them. Gradually we went from bemoaning the fact that we couldn't get a colorful prepackaged homeschool curriculum to identifying more and more with unschoolers. Unschooling fit best with the flexable schedule we needed to keep because of illness, and the delight directed learning really struck a chord with the way we like to do things. Together in our unschooling journey, we have designed and built a house completely by ourselves with the children, and remodeled and built bedrooms for all of the children in another house. The children each designed their own rooms. Our 13 year old started her own petsitting business when she was ten. Our children are video gamers, and some of them are learning to read through video games. Our oldest child is now 17, and we have four other unschooled children, ages 13, 10, 8, and 6. Our oldest child wants to become either a professional video gamer, or create video games with programs like 3D studio max. For the past 2 years, we have been trying to get a computer to run the massive 3D studio Max software. We have the software, but have had all kinds of hardware problems with the first and the second computers we have gotten to run the software...this has been our ongoing obstacle. Our children love animals. We have three cats and a dog. Some of our children are on the ASD, and I have been amazed at how well children with learning disabilities like ASD, dyslexia, or ADHD can figure out the best way to teach themselves through unschooling.
I am glad to be the mod here on the learning at home and beyond forum!
