what curriculums do you use??

Thread Starter
I am very interested in homeschooling and am researching curriculums...without the search feature its slow going (only on page 61 after a couple days). Just wondering if those of you that have Kindergarten + age children could share what curriculums you use. I have a couple bookmarked so far, but would love to research as many as I can so I can make a final decision! Thanks!

This isn't really a curriculum but I've been doing lots of reading on the Charlotte Mason method and I really like the approach. There are a few sites online but I didn't find them to be as useful as the IRL books about CM that I found at my local library.

The search feature is back, but it doesn't help me much because I am interested in researching the k12 curriculum.

The three letter rule is stupid, IMO.

Up until now we have been using a Montessori at home approach. I like it but I'd like to be more involved with the kids so I am looking into other things.

We use/have used/will be using:
Singapore Math
Mathsmart
Saxon (barely used it though)
Englishsmart
Story of the World
Five in a row
Come Sit By Me

We mostly just pick and choose what works best for us. I'm starting to lean a bit towards Charlotte Mason/Classical style.

My ds is 5. I just purchased him the Singmore Kindergarten program. For reading and phonics we have the Learning Resources Reading Rods. That's as far as I have gotten. Either than that I purchased a Science book from Usborne and have been filling our craft cupboard with supplies.

DS is 4, but we'll be doing some kindergarten stuff this year. We just started Explode the Code, which has been a hit so far. I have Shiller Math arriving probably tomorrow so I'll have to update everyone on that later, but I'm really excited about it. I think it will fit us to a T. Other than that, it's just reading, crafts, and playing right now. I bought Five in a Row, but to be honest most of the projects related to the stories seem over his head right now. We'll see in a few months how things change.

My favorite resource to find homeschool-friendly curriculum is the Rainbow Resource Catalog (www.rainbowresource.com) They have a 1,000+ page catalog with everything you can think of for homeschooling.

We use:
Singapore Math
Shurley English(grades 2+)
Hooked On Phonics
Story of the World
Homeschool Science Adventures
and lots of other misc books I've found different places. Have fun!

I make up my own letter based themes and sometimes combine that with a Five In A Row book. I use some of the ideas from the FIAR manuel as well as find things online. I also have Math-U_See and am thinking about buying Alphabet Island phonics.

Five In A Row- http://www.fiveinarow.com/

I am going to be using the Charlotte Mason/Ablesideonline curriculum next school year combined with Right Start Math. For reading/phonics I use Turbo Reader.

Our main curriculum is Sonlight. Right now my kids are also using Explode the Code, Singapore Math and Miquon Math.

In the past, we've used various combinations of:
Ambleside Online
Five in a Row
Hands on Homeschooling
Handwriting without Tears
A few things from Christian Liberty Press
Lots of 'preschool' workbooks

For my 5yo (doing 1-2 grade work) we use:

Story of the World

Usborne Encyclopedia of World History, internet linked

The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading (almost finished)

Started with Bob Books for Reading, then went to TOPGTR
If your child doesn't know phonics yet, I highly recommend Starfall.com!! It's free, fun, and very effective with teaching a child to read.

Various I Can Read books from the library

First Language Lessons

Zaner-Bloser handwriting

Math-U-See

Artistic Pursuits

two animal/anatomy children's encylopedias for science, plus she grew tomatoes and sunflowers from seeds last spring and learned about plants. Also whatever science books from the library on a subject she's currently interested in such as vocanoes or a certain animal or the weather.

Still searching for something that teaches writing/creative writing, but that can wait a few more months.

We do not do all of these every day. She spends only about 60-90 minutes on a good day with "school" but we still manage to get a lot done.
