I had just posted a couple of times about my calico, Jezebel. She had been wheezing for a couple of weeks and had started dropping a lot of weight so off to the vet we went today.
It turns out that when they tapped her chest, they drew out air. Which means, basically that her lungs were collapsing because at least one had a bolus that popped and was leaking (she had a hole in her lung) and she was going to die without being put in extreme intensive care on a ventilator. Even then, her chances of survival were only 30%.
So, I let her go peacefully and quickly this afternoon while we petted her and told her goodbye.
The vet is doing a necropsy tomorrow to see if she can determine why the bolus existed in the first place - it's not a very common thing to happen. Usually when the lungs collapse the cat dies rapidly. However, Jezebel showed signs of illness in April when she was at the vet for her teeth extractions. She had pockets of fluid around her lungs then. The vet thinks it was a long standing lung infection. Jez had no symptoms until 2 weeks ago.
Jezebel was a great cat, and we will miss her. I only wish I could have done something more to help her. Jezebel was 8 years old. Good bye kitty.
