Half ECing!

Hello to all you ECers and non-ECers,

I just wanted to let you all know that it is possible to half-EC.
This happened to us totally accidentally!

When my dd was about 5 months and started eating more and more solids, her stool changed (got harder) and she started to look at me for assistance when she would poop. The experience of passing harder stool was different and she clearly felt it. I decided to help her because I knew that a little constipation was frequent when first introducing solids. I opened her diaper and held her knees to her stomach (it helped her pass the stool). From that point on, dd communicated her desire to poop pretty much every time. She looked at me and whinned to indicate that she needed help. I could tell that she wasn't hurting, she just prefered having assistance. Almost like she didn't want it in her diaper. From about 5 months to 9 months, when dd indicated that she wanted to poop, I would lay her down, open her diaper, gentlely hold her knees to her stomach, she would do it on a biodegrateable liner, and I would put the diaper back on. The poop then went in the toilet. As simple as that! At 9 months, I deciced to start saying "caca"? (I am french Canadian) evey time she would poop and at 10 months, she was saying it herself almost every time. At that point, I decided to try putting her on a potty when she said "caca", but the potty scared her. The following day, I decided to try a small toilet seat over the big toilet and that was the answer! From that day on (at 10 months old), dd has been saying "caca" and going on the big toilet to poop. It sounds rediculous, but dd enjoys doing her "caca" so much! We carry the small toilet seat whenever we go out of the house so it works everywhere.
........and that is how we accidentally became half-ECers!

Dd turned 1 year old last week and she now also pees on the toilet sometimes when she poops. We have been saying "pipi"??? BRAVO! . This week, she has been peeing in the toilet so much that I will soon have to write to say that she is 3/4 ECing!

Well, I just wanted to share this because I think it demonstrares how natural ECing really is if one can end up doing it unintentionally.

What do you think?

I love it - "3/4 EC'ing." "

That is fabulous - what great communication.

And as they say in the hokey-pokey . . . "That's what its all about!"

Doesn't sound ridiculous to me. It sounds like you are very in tune with each other. Lovely! It's nice to hear your dd is so communicative and that you are responsive to her needs.

I know a little boy who finished ec at 10 months (youngest age I've encountered in the USA). He and his mother worked as a team as you are, and the combo of signaling on his part and some reminders on her part enabled him to be diaperless at 10 months. This should NOT be a goal for anyone (goals and expectations set us up for disappointment--and one thing I really like about your story is that you discovered ec unintentionally as a means to make your dd more comfy), as it is relatively unusual to do this well in a Western society at 10 months, but it does demonstrate that babies are able to control their elimination much younger than we are told by our doctors, and you've proved it too :-)

Have you kept a little diary or journal of your dd's development? It will be interesting to look back someday.

This comment reminds me of a woman I worked with years ago who said her daughter was very 'clean', even as an infant. (I'm sure this woman was pretty conventional and used disposies, etc.). But she went on to say that her daughter refused to poop in her diaper. She'd scream and scream when she had to poop and the only way she'd poop is if the diaper was taken off. Sounds like elimination control (and communication) to me.
