Anyone reading this? I'm half way through and it's AMAZING.
I am clueless regarding the Bible, it's the story of Dinah and her Mothers, their experiences with childbirth, midwifery, honoring their menstrual cyles etc...very cool story so far.

I agree it is a very cool book. Kind of falls apart at the end I think but still a definite thumbs up over all

Love the red tent! I need to reread it, as it has been too long

Great book! I just read it a few months ago and really enjoyed it. I liked the ending- it made me cry!

It's on my "to read" list this summer.

I make a point to read this one every year - I always enjoy it, never get sick of it. I'm not a fan of the ending, but the rest of the cok makes up for it.

I love this book- I love how they celebrate women and motherhood in the book through the use of the "red tent." And I love how they talk about the importance of Dinah as a dughter to pass down all the traditions of her mothers. For example, I can teach my boys all I can in my ability about life but I can share with them the beauty of giving birth- I think that is something special that I can share with my daughter (not share, but maybe have in common is more like the term). I love how you get to see what was going on "behind the scenes" in the Bible- I mean, even if the story itself is not true, the life describe in it probably is and it is so fascinating to find out what the women were probably doing while the men were out doing all the stuff they got all the credit for in the Bible. I'm so glad someone posted this- I loaned my copy to a friend and I need to get it back- I haven't read it in ages and need to reread it.

I agree!

I found the religious ceremonies of the women fascinating.

I bought it while I was pregnant with Evan and I have already read it like 5 times! I love love love love this book!!! I think it should be required reading for every woman! I plan to have my future daughters (if any) read it when they hit their first moon! What an AMAZING book!

did any of you feel a longing for that connection to other women after seeing how the sisters and the daughters and the mothers and midwives had such a deep sharing. sigh. i want a red tent in my back yard

YES!!! I would love a Red Tent, but I usually refer to it as a Menstrual Hut.

I want to read this book. I've just begun reading about honoring your menstrual cycle and think it's really important. Today it's not valued and it should be ~

i feel sad that at least in my life anyway, women's traditions and knowledge are not shared and passed down as they were in the book. maybe it's just my family though but it will be different for my daughters.

Yes, I agree. When I think about how little I know about my grandmothers, it is sad. I know nothing about my great-grandmothers. I've been keeping journals since I was 15 and I hope to seal them and have them given to my grandchildren (if I have any) when I pass on. I want them to know about me.

Right after my DD was born I went through this crazy information accumulation phase where I wanted to know all about my family. Nobody knew anything about it. It was truly bizarre. Just *poof*. My DH's family has all kinds of great family stories and everybody can list people back to "the old country". I think that's so cool and definitely want that for my children.

ITA! Amazing, wonderful....sad that these traditions have been lost many, many years ago.
