On the heels of the boxer/pit thread..

Wanna take a guess? Our baby girl is 3 1/2 years old and a beautiful brindle. She has a white five pointed star on her chest and two white toes on each foot.

Anywhere we go, we get half and half opinion. "Oh what a beautiful boxer. I love boxers. They are so sweet!" and the next person "What a gorgeous pit!" Over and over and over.

When we adopted her she was listed on petfinder as a full blooded boxer. Our vet and trainer swore she was full blooded boxer. As she got older the vet conceded "There's probably a little pit in there." and then older, "probably about half." and then later "Who told you this dog was a boxer?" You did!

What do you think?

LOL! That's cute!

Think of the crazy looks we'd get.

Looks like a pit to me with the long face, wrinkled forehead, and that skinny tail. Cute dog either way though.

I don't really see much (if any) boxer in her face.

Oh I see lots of boxer, the ear set and the way her eyes are set. also the underbite. She looks boxer on profile.

Puppies are so hard to tell, it seems like all their different parts grow at different rates--one week boxer, next week pit, week after that--who knows? There is a guy in Ohio who is breeding boxers with several different bull breeds for weight pull. I think his url is pulldoggies.com if you want to see some pics. So, I can certainly see what looks like pit in there, but it could also be a BYB boxer.

Oh my god- You should see my 3 yr old Lincoln. We have had the same argument here over and over again. They look exactly alike but our latest on lincoln is that he's Plott Hound (Carolina state dog- used for treeing bears and cougar- also the first "genuine" american breed) and sharpei. I met a plott hound (they are almost all brindle) and she, Java, is a pure Plott and has the same high waist as Lincoln (like a Boxer) and is skinny like a boxer and hound but longer nose...
How do you post photos, darnit...I'll show you!

OK, I have no idea if I am doing this right. This is a check one two

Yeah, I have photos! Here's lincoln... I don't have puppy photos (in fact I don't have too many at all) but he's got a white chest and tippy-toes...don't laugh at his sweqater. He has no hair in his pits or thighs and we spend a lot of time in the snow- yes, those are booties...

He's adorable!! His face really does look like a sharpei, he's got that sharpei shnozz!

He could almost be Blazey's brother! I love the sweater and the booties!! He's a sweetie!

I'd say a sharpeiXpit/ pit mix. His jaw is all bull breed, not houndy looking to me at all. His ears look bull/terrier like as well. Considering how very rare Plotts are, a bull breed mix seems more likely to me. That nose sure looks sharpei to me, though.

I agree with Aaron....I confess I always sort of laugh when people tell me they have a cross of a dog that there may be 5 of in their area....and everytime someone has one cross, all of a sudden, every cross could be an XYZ.
It happened in a city near here....everyone in town seemed to have a catahoula leopard dog cross, frankly none of them bore much resemblance, but someone supposedly in the "know" said it and then everyone at the dog park suddenly had a leopard dog cross. At the time, there were 6 of them registered in Ontario as a hole, I'm guessing that all of them weren't out running around breeding to random strays.
Same with all the people who have wolf crosses, that's great but do they have ANY clue what is involved in getting a wolf to breed out of the pack?? I had one guy who had 4 of them, all wolf crosses, all of them from the humane society, then he swore up and down to me that I didn't have a clue what I was talking about because he swore Havoc was also a wolf cross, oh and that it had to be because he's a solid black. Ok dude...I flew with his mother to Texas, to be bred to a specifc dog, watched them breed, paid the guy and what a wolf nailed her on the tarmac at the airport while I wasn't looking???

I think that Blaze COULD be a purebred boxer. When boxers are bred poorly, the head shape is the first to go. The chiseled muzzle gets longer and broader and many of them do start to look pit-y. So I wouldn't necessarily doubt the petfinder ad.

Lincoln is actually the first "shar-pei cross" that I've ever seen that I agree is at least half shar-pei. Many people look at head wrinkles or whatnot and glibly say that their dog must be shar-pei, but he's actually got the hippo lip (peis have very thickened lip, which is a breed characteristic and is not really found elsewhere). He's definitely not half hound, though--look at his ears. Anything houndy would have given him big pendulous ears. Pit is ALWAYS a good guess for mixing with anything, since there are so many of them and they have lower neuter rates than other breeds, but he could be mixed with anything brindle and with rose or upright ears and a relatively short nose.

To the OP, I would bet a whole bunch of money your dog is a boxer/pit cross. I've met a few of those. My cousin has one. Hers shows more pit and I think yours shows more boxer. She is such a pretty girl.

To azurite, I have met purebred plott hounds (almost adopted one!) and I would bet a whole bunch of money that there's not one drop of it in your cutie pie. Very pit though. I have seen a few sharpei/pit mixes and they looked very similar to yours. Those snow pictures are so cute.

I need to post one of these threads about my pup when my camara is working!

I wonder why Lincoln has such a high waist- He seems so lanky and skinny for a pit/sharpei. When I got him as a itty bitty puppy, he was all wrinkles- soo cute. Thanx for your opinions- that brings me back to where I was a couple years ago- nuttin' wrong with that.
Blazey sure is cute too! I definitly see the boxer in her face...and lincoln and her chest/toes markings are very similar- I am just going to pretend their litter mates...

Same here. There are a couple of rescues in our city who label anything with vaguely hound-like structure and brindle coloring a "Plott Hound mix." Now we certainly do get lots of hounds and hound mixes around here because we're flanked by hunt country and there are oodles of kennels. But they're almost entirely American Foxhound kennels. I'm sure there are a handful of Plotts out there, but not so many that they're wandering a few hours into the city every week or so.

Alot of pits have tucked up bellies like that. Game dogs are typically skinny, lanky dogs with big muscular rears--much like your dog's. Here is a pic of a game bred pit-- http://www.gamedog.info/photos/Asia.jpg

Very pretty girl you have there. I vote boxer/pit mix, too.

My $ is on 100% Boxer, though not at all close to the breed standard. Beautiful pup none the less!
