The Seven Things Project - wanna join me? - Page 6

I'm still in. I'm not in the official blog ring...but I am still checking on this thread. It is really hard to keep up--it's not hard to get rid of the stuff...just often hard to have time (with my kiddos and dh's work schedule) to go through stuff.
That being said, I have gotten rid of about 20 bags of stuff in 4 weeks: clothing, toys, books...and just garbage. Today I just sent 3 bags of baby clothes to a friend.
Good job everyone! Keep going!

My condo is a disaster, and my motivation is really low. To add to the problem, my mother moved out of her condo late last fall, and left behind a bunch of stuff because she was in a hurry to go, and asked me if I could finish clearing it out for her; I dumped more than 40 large bags of trash from her place in the first week alone. Anyway, I ended up bringing home a lot of semi-crap: not necessarily trash, but not anything I needed either.

I've also gotten a lot of too-big hand-me-down clothes for my daughter, and some for me (maternity clothes), mostly from relatives. It's great to get them, but a pain to store. I don't have a basement or an attic. We pay $165 per month for a 7x11 storage room down the street.

This 7-things-a-week seems like a good idea. That's just one item a day.

I haven't been able get a blog going, but I have typed up a list of things I've gotten rid of in the last 2-3 weeks:

At relative’s yard sale: (took in about $60)
Pack-and-Play, with fitted sheets and a few related accessories
2 safety gates
Foot spa (still in box)
Picture frame (from mom’s stuff)
4 baby dresses
Baby blanket (new with tags)
2 baby outfits (new with tags)
Stuffed sorting toy

Given to Goodwill:
4 boxes of baby clothing
1 box of maternity clothing
lego table
used sleeping bag (received from relative this month)

Thrown away:
Legless twin bed frame
Dirty twin futon
2 bags of stained clothing
A shoe without a match
2 wobbly folding chairs

Gone from condo, but went to DH’s new office:
Microwave
Small MDF bookcase DH rescued from trash room

I'm still struggling along.

The past week has been more of a cleaning and sorting week rather than a purging week. It seems like I've been bringing in as much as I take out, but I've been getting more organized.

One example: Most of the clothes I actually wear end up sitting in hampers or on top of my bureau, because the drawers are filled with stuff I'm not wearing.

I took a sheet of paper, and drew my bureau drawers, listed the types of clothes I wear, and determined how much space I have for each type of item. I now have one drawer for all of my long-sleeve shirts, so I purged a bunch that I don't wear anymore, either because they are stained or don't fit, and then I bought myself a few new ones that fit me well. Then I did the same thing with the rest of my clothing categories.

Now I have room to keep the clothes I wear insidethe bureau.

I pulled a rolling rack out of the bedroom that was holding some of the overflow clothing, and moved it to a spot right outside the bathroom. I was able to fit the extra toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, wipes, and tissue boxes on it. Those items had just been in a big random stack in the corner, so it looks a lot tidier now.

I cleared out a stack of junky boxes that were mixed in with that stuff; I tossed leftover cut pieces of vinyl tile, and an undercounter wineglass rack that I've been meaning to install for several years.

I keep finding small bits of trash all over the apartment, like drycleaning tags, tissues, floss, receipts, etc, and I realize it's because:
A) Our apartment is about 60 ft long, and 15 feet wide;
B) We have only 2 trash cans, and they are in the kitchen and bath, at one end of the apartment;
C) Everyone here is too lazy to walk that far to throw out little bits of trash.

So, I will be getting a few nice wastebaskets this week, one for each bedroom, and one for the living room. I figure a wastebasket is less unsightly than all that debris on the surfaces.

Well, I suppose my post is getting away from the original 7 things idea, but it springs from the same motivation, i think.... Instead of having to pick up 7 pieces of trash per room, I will be able walk through and just empty the bins.

Well, THANK YOU earthchick, for the inspiration!

This idea of clearing out seven things a week, just one thing a day, is great. If I miss a day or two, it's not too difficult to catch back up.

Slow, steady, and sustainable!

I'm in. I usually have something along these lines as one of my weekly goals, but it is not nearly as much fun when I only get to celebrate it in my head.
