Is this a good price and energy rating? I need help fast!!

I posted this in "Mindful Home Management" but Then figured it should be here instead couldnt figure out how to move it so I just copy/pasted

I just found a used "Tappan" chest freezer on craigslist for $200. It looks like it has hardley been used. 14.5 cubic feet. very clean inside. manual defrost.1993. The lady said it didnt cost much on her elec. bill. So here are my questions.. Is this a good price, or should I try to talk her down?
Also, I looked it up and the *adjusted for age* energy rating is 509. Is that good? how does that come out in $$ per month?
I just know it will save us alot of money buying in bulk on sale, and will be so much more convenient!, but is this the right one?

I don't know about that particular model, but IMO that is way too much money for a chest freezer that old. Here is a brand new chest freezer about the same size, (manual defrost) for $379.

. Keep in mind that Minimum Energy Performance Standards, which set minimum efficiency levels for refrigerators and freezers, came into force on 1 October 1999. I wouldn't buy a freezer older than that. And no, 509 is not a good energy rating.

I think that it is going to cost you AT LEAST $20-25 a month just to run it. A new one would cost you about $2.

And thats a crappy price...I sold mine for $50...and it wasn't even that old!

I don't want to derail the thread but this may help the OP as well. I need to buy a freezer too. What do you ladies recommend? There is so much to chose from and I want to make sure I get a good one for a good price that won't consume lots of electricity. Share your wisdom!

What is manual defrost? Is that good or bad?

Manual defrost is when you have to scrape (?) the frost off yourself.. not sure how often but its not a big deal to me as long as its not once a week!

I can't believe this... that lady told me it was great with electricity! She said with normal elec. consumption AND and electric water heater her elec. bill was less that $80 per mo.:

We got our freezer used from an appliance store for $100 (I think it's around 20 cubic feet, unsure of energy rating). I think $200 is way too much, especially since it's 13 years old.
