The Lost Boys by Orson Scott Card
This is not the vampire book. it left me shaking for days, in a deep thought trance for weeks, and it was the first book that came to mind when I saw this thread

I'm reading 100yrs of solitude now, I didn't know it would be a tear jerker!!!
