Expectations and age

Is there a good resource for guildelines on this?

We are having some real problems with ds, things that at age 5 I think he should be able to do, directions he should be able to follow, ways he should be able to control his body ect.

I really don't think we are expecting to much from him, he's not 2, he's 5.

I don't know how accurate or AP friendly this is but here is one source:

If she starts the day off right things usually go well but if she is disrupted or upset early in the day she often finds it difficult to get on the right track and will stay upset all day. The same holds for starting a task. If she gets frustrated it is best for her to start all over again rather than keep on with the same task.

Other children express their tension by becoming irritable, especially with their mothers. They may become stubborn and resistant or whiny and cranky. Other children will become overactive and noisy. The five year old will usually cry when scolded or fussed at.
This is my 5 year old to a T. LOL. So far I have 5 to be a very trying age, LOL. I have come to accept that just because she was able to clean up her toys Wednesday doesn't mean she is capable of doing it on Friday. 5 year olds are odd creatures, LOL. Its easy to expect a lot of them because they seem so much bigger, talk so much more...its easy to forget how little they still are.

they are a bit dated but still full of good anecdotes and examples of what to expect at different ages - by Louise Bates Ames - there is a series - your one year old, your two year old etc. small little books that are easy to read
not written from an AP perspective, more behavioural but I did not find them incompatible with my parenting
have a look at amazon.com
