Wool Stuffing
I have been a toy and doll designer for more thirty years and I came to prefer wool stuffing above all other stuffing materials because it is self extinguishing; it stops burning on it's own when removed from the source of flame -- a very important safety feature when making things for children. It doesn't migrate through to the outside of porous or loosely knitted fabrics and it holds it shape and loft. I just love working with it as it softens and soothes my hands with the traces of natural lanolin that is left after washing. It resists mold and mite infestation without harmful pesticides and moths can be controlled by placing the wool or the finished product into the freezer for a few days. The best place to order the highest quality wool batts for doll and toy making and also for use in quiltmaking is West Earl Woolen Mill. The phone number is 717-859-2241.
Their price at $5.25/lb. is less than half of retail and comes in 2#, 2.5# and 3# amounts. It is a wonderful family run business and they are so nice and helpful on the phone.
You can also write them at 110 Cocalico Creek Rd., Ephrata, Pa.17522. Please post some photo links for us all to admire, when you are finished!!

I save all of my yarn scraps in a glass jar (it looks neat) and then use them to stuff small animals/gnomes.
Another idea I had, but haven't tried yet, was too cut up old t-shirts into really really small bits of fluff and stuff with that.
Cheap and easy!

For cotton, you can get any ordinary quilt batting... but I think wool sounds nicer!

Near Sea Naturals sells organic cotton batting and stuffing. It was a long time ago that I bought mine, so I don't remember the cost.
