How long do you need to hang on to "important papers?"

I'm going through the filing cabinet. I can't remember how long to keep things like tax forms, paid bills, etc. I know I've seen it all typed out somewhere, but can't remember where.

They say 7 years. But I've kept my tax returns forever & info regarding the sale & purchase of our houses.
