Update
Thanks for the well wishes.
The hospital LC was an idiot. We'd been nursing for more than 24 hours with success before she came. Then she wanted to show me how to do the football hold. I told her we had tried it already, but b/c of his size, my size and small breasts, it was very uncomfortable and ineffective and just made ds fussy. She insisted and we spent the rest of the time struggling with it and trying to calm ds' crying.

: That was all she offered.
We found out on day 3 that ds had been slightly constipated and dehydrated, which is why they started us supplementing. He's peeing and pooping regularly now, and he lost almost 1 full pound in the hospital, but now is gaining.
I looked up constant nursing/crying on the LLL website and found info on GER. DS had been showing several of the symptoms, so I began holding him more upright, limiting his feedings to when he just starts to fall asleep and propping him up when he sleeps. SUCCESS!! His crying is almost completely eliminated - he still gets fussy a few times a day, but not the crying for hours...

I get nearly a full nights' sleep

due to our recent mastery of the side laying position, so life has improved by leaps and bounds in the past few days. Yay!
