goofy baby girl hygiene question...

OK, so I feel dumb even asking this, but that's never stopped me before

Wiping DS during diaper changes was a no brainer, everything was pretty well "packaged up", you know?

Fast forward to DD, and at the hospital the midwife, a nurse, and the pediatrician all told me to NOT wipe the gunk from between her labia out, to just let it flush out on its own...but there's really a LOT of it, and I want to be sure she's not gonna get some kind of infection or something. It's pretty cakey and white in there. The only time I've been going in there gently is if she has some poop in there, and I just get the poop out and leave everything else alone.

So do I really, really just leave it alone? She's finally getting tub baths every couple days now that her cord is off so that should start to help with "flushing", but I just almost feel bad not cleaning more in there...but I also don't want to mess with anything that's normal and wind up hurting her...

Like I said, I feel pretty dumb, especially since 3 separate people told me to leave her alone, I guess I'm just looking for anecdotal confirmation, or other ideas from all of you since I trust you all! Moms of girls, help!!!!!!! :

I see your point, I usually wipe it out- gently. I also use cloth wipes and if its done w the sposie kind, it leaves it red. So that could be it- try it and find out!

nak i had 3 girls and wiped all - never had a problem w/this method. but i also pick boogers and try to help dry skin so i'm not much for 'leave it alone' - take my 2 cents fwiw LOL

I wiped it out because I was never told not too. Actually, I think I was told TO wipe it out but I think it's probably the equivalant to the stuff (I forget what it's called, shimgma or something?) that's under the foreskin on boys that is there to actually clean it..since you're not supposed to even pull the foreskin back...so maybe you should just leave it. I'd try and look it up.

We were told to leave it alone, but every now and then I gently swipe with a wet cloth wipe. The white stuff seems fine, but she does manage to get poop in there once in a while, so I check every few changes. I think they mean to prevent people from spreading things wide and scrubbing.

Whatever you do, don't use soap or alcohol wipes or any other chemically kind of thing, as that's an open invitation for irritation and infection.

I gently wipe during bath time. Just open her up and flush it out with clean water. Seems to work just fine for us.

I was told to leave it alone and it'll come out on it's own. I wiped her and some would come out but I never did force it to come out. She did just fine and doesn't have any more of it. I'm so glad that our home nurse informed us that little girls get something that is like a monthly sometimes because she did get something like that and if I didn't know about it I would have freaked out when I saw it. It wasn't much of that either but enough to make me freak if I didn't know.

: me too! me too!!!

Its all I can do to leave pimples alone

I wiped it w/ both my girls too and no problems...having a boy this time around is soooo weird. Im trying to train myself to wipe from back to front cuz its easiest to get under the hangy parts, but its such a NO NO w/ girls, so my hand is programed to go from front to back....just funny how its so different:
