ok she was 8.14 at birth and is now 17.4 at 3 months, shes huge!! My Ds was a big baby (ff) but not this big. Am I over feeding her? She doesnt cry much but when she does she is either hungry or tired so I nurse her either way she likes to be nuresed to sleep. So she eats every 1-3 hours it jusrt depends and usually only for 5-10 min if sh eats for 30 min its because she fell asleep and is just sucking. Sometimes she eats 2-3 time in an hour only for maybe 5 min at a time then sometimes she eats for 10 min thn not again for 2 hours. She likes to use me as her paci and I wonder if I should stop this because she is getting to big. I'm only worried about her size for her health not for vanity reasons, my doc seems okay w/ it and said if she didn't want milk then she would turn away from breast. But Sometimes when I'm eating something tasty I dont stop when I'm full because its comforting to me or tastes good, am I setting my daughter up for this type of behavior? I just don't know what to do I feel guilty feeding her so often because I'm afraid she will overeat just cuz its comforting to her, she refuses a bottle or a paci so I cannot give her water or let her use a paci to soothe herself, I'm really worried and upset am I doing somthing wrong?
With Ds he was formula fed so i was strict w/ bottles every 3 hours should I limit her nursing to every 3 hours?? I was told you shouldnt do that if you are BFing what do I do?

Thanks

If you pay close attention, you'll notice the way she nurses for "comfort" and the way she nurses for "food" are different, your body is triggered for fewer letdowns for comfort nursing. I would say that esp. if your doc is OK with it, that you shouldn't worry. Lots of babies gain a huge amount of weight in the first 6 or 9 months, then taper off through the second year, i.e., grow into their weight gain. Also as she starts to become mobile, she'll slim down, crawling, walking etc.

Wouldn't worry about it--she sounds very healthy!

she sounds normal and healthy to me!

Normal and healthy, don't worry about it. Babies are supposed to eat a lot and pack away fat, it's how we've survived as a species up to this point. Comfort nursing is NOT the same as packing away Ben and Jerry's after a stressful day at work. Newborn/infant psychology is very different from adult psychology; their brains are still growing and developing. Nursing isn't just necessary for food at her age, it also is part of how they learn to trust and feel secure. If she was getting too much to eat, she'd stop eating and throw up. Other than that, she's getting exactly how much she needs. Please don't give her anything other than breastmilk at her age--why mess with a good thing?

She sounds like a very robust and healthy baby--good job!!

Does she do a lot of spitting up? It's been my experience that a baby will spit up if they've had too much. And, in my opinion, you should not limit nursing. Nursing babies need to eat on a different schedule than ff babies, it's digested at different rates, etc. She's very healthy, this is all excellent!!

My dd was 16lbs at 3 months from a birth weight of 7lbs6oz. Breastfed babies tend to bulk up in the first 6 months and then start to slim down as they start to move. It's totally normal! Keep nursing her as she wishes and all will be fine. My 16lbs 3month old is now a whopping 22lbs at 19 months! Congrats on the wonderful mama milk your babe is getting!

Mine all doubled their birth weight before three months of age. My second dd doubled her birth weight by 6 weeks old. She nursed like your dd. I wouldn't worry about it. All three of my girls grew out before they grew long. They seemed to gain a lot in the first six or seven months, but didn't get a whole lot longer. Then the weight gain slowed down and they got longer. It leveled off after that. They are all normal weight and two are on the petite side after being very chubby babies. Your doctor doesn't sound worried, so I don't think you should worry about it.

Perfectly normal. Breastfed babies don't overeat. Trust her.

once she starts crawling/cruising the weight gain will probably slow down a lot. EBF babies grow very quickly in the beginning. you should be proud your body put all that chub on your baby, i bet she is reallly cute!

You cannot overfeed a baby from the breast. They simply will refuse to nurse. And a baby really doesn't need any water or anything but breastmilk -- she is getting everything she needs from you. Sounds like she (and you) are doing wonderfully. I agree with others here, breastfed babies gain quickly in the beginning and level off usually around 6 months or when the become more mobile. Keep up the good work!

I have wondered the same thing. DD was gaining a pound a week. 14lbs @ 2 months, 19lbs @ 4, 23lbs @ 6months (completly off the charts) and she was only 7lb 2oz at birth. My Doctor was a little concerned @ 6 but when she learned that I was only breastfeeding, her concerned dropped.
Also you need to look at what you are eating.....while you shouldn't be dieting, you should be eating healthy....I know that I was drinking WAY too much soda and junk food and I am sure that contributed to her rapid weight gain.

Totally normal. All of my babies doubled their weight within 2 months of birth, and are now active and lean children.
