I'm nak, but the wife ofmy dh's friend just called to ask my advice. Her baby is 2 weeks old and she's had a headache for about 5 days. Today her lower back started aching really badly and she spiked a fever. Any ideas? She's going to the doc tomorrow. I have no idea. She did have an epidural for delivery, but I looked up epidural headaches and they seem to happen right away, not a week later. I was thinking maybe UTI? Any ideas?

I've heard of people having them one or two or even three or four weeks out. Is she eating all righrt? Gettign plenty of rest? Any other symtoms to make you believe a UTI? I'd put money on a spinal headache. IN fact, before you said she had an epidural, I assumed she did and was going to guess that. I didn't even realize you said it until I started this reply. HOpe she feels better soon!

I had a UTI that went to my kidneys while pregnant with DD, and it was much more painful than a back ache!! Within a couple of hours I couldn't even sit up straight, and I ended up in the ER and then checked into L&D overnight because I was over 20 weeks pregnant and they wanted to make sure I wasn't going to o into labor. It was so stupid, they kept a monitor on me all night and didn't give me antibiotics til morning even though I knew I had a kidney infection. The amazing thing was that once I got antibiotics the pain disappeared lickity split. ( And the stupid doctor I had tried to talk me out of a homebirth.
: It was so irritating. Of course I ended up with a c-section, but that's another story for another day!!)

Thinking of her... I hope she gets better soon... I would go to the doctor. I would also have her start taking cranberry pills right away- just in case.

A fever sounds like an infection of some kind. I had similar symptoms the week after delivering my third dc, I could hardly walk. Turns out I had an infection. After I started on antibiotics I felt normal within 48 hours. She should see an MD ASAP!

Yup, I wouldn't wait until "tomorrow" to see a doc. Was she catheterized when she had the epidural? This could easily have caused a UTI, then it can easily travel to her kidneys. This could very well cause backache and fever. I've had a spinal headache. She would completely absolutely be unable to function with one, UNLESS she was completely horizontal, at which point she'd feel very normal. But as soon as she hit anything beyond completely horizontal, she'd be in absolute agony again. Hope some of that info helps...but the most important issue would be to see a primary care provider immediately, or go to the prompt care/ER near her. You don't want to mess with infection...and a spinal headace could be patched and taken care of rather easily.

Thanks for your replies. I forgot I'd posted. She went and saw a doc. They said it was the epi causing all of the symptoms. Nothing else wrong w/ her. They gave her some meds and if she isn't better soon, they're going to do a blood patch.
The saddest thing about this, IMO, is that she was going for natural. She was in labor 21 hours before she got the epidural and was pushing 10 min later. They shouldn't even have given it to her!
