During the day DS sleeps most of the time and is a VERY easy baby. Around 9PM he goes in to a screaming fit that seems gas related, but I'm not always certain. This lasts until about 1AM most nights. It's like a Dr. Jeckyl/Mr. Hyde scenerio ... Wonderful and easy baby by day and an inconsolable screamer by night. Could something that I'm eating do this and only affect him at night? If so, any ideas as to what foods make babies gassy? Any help is most appreciated.

I think that's a very common thing among little babies- they can get really fussy at night. My son, who was my first, used to start up at 10 and end the screaming around 1. It was crazy.....or I should say, it drove me crazy
....I tried eliminations diets and stuff, but nothing seemed to work for him, it just went away on its own around 4 months. Of course, he was not normally real content anyways, that was just his worst time of day....I've heard a lot of theories, but I guess after having 3 kids do the fussy evening spells, I still have no idea!

The research on breastfed babies and mom's diet definitely indicates that, genuine food sensitivities and allergies aside, for most babies, it doesn't matter what you eat. (IIRC, there was an RCT done with a bunch of babies where the parents swore up and down that food X made baby fussy. They had each mom pump milk both with and without food X in her system, randomly assigned her baby to receive one of her two milks, and had the parents rate the ensuing fussiness. They found no difference whatsoever between the treatment and control groups.)
And FWIW, DS is definitely fussier in the evenings, too.

I don't think it is food related, especially since it is so time-related. I feel for you though - my first ds had a 'fussy period' like that at night. It lasted several weeks and then passed.
My current one just started screaming with gas all night last night and all day today. I'm going bonkers!

Dairy is usually a big culprit...I think you can find a list of foods that tend to cause gas at http://www.askdrsears.com I like Maria's info that diet doesn't matter - I wish I could believe that but I'm scared to!

I really recommend the Happiest Baby on the Block book - he's got great suggestions. Are you trying tight swaddling?

I think most babies have a period during the day where they're fussy as all get out. DS did and he grew out of it after a bit. I doubt it's food related, although it probably wouldn't hurt to try if it makes you feel better. After that, all I can say is to pop that baby in the sling and get ready to walk the floors.
