Cloth diaper updates - what are you using most?

So, now that many of us (not me, of course : ) have actual baby bottoms to diaper with soft fluffiness, I'd like to know what folks are using, what is working and not so much working. We had a number of threads early on about what to buy etc - now that it has been put to the test, what can you tell those of us still trying desperately to feel like things are in order?

If you went to the hospital or birth center, what did you take with you, and what did you need?

If you stayed home, what did you reach for first?

And either way, what are your faves at this point, what do you think you couldn't live without, and is there anything you wonder why on earth you bought it?

Thanks for sharing! I'm trying to pack a bag for the hospital and I want to take cloth with me. So I'll be :

I was given one package of newborn diapers. I do believe I'll make use of them and spare my pretty little Fuzzi Bunz the onslaught of meconium poo. I've got one already in Fuzzi Bunz, but I can't wait to put my litte baby girl in hot pink diaper!

I had no idea about CD really before I came here and this is my first CD baby, I used the Huggies NB Swaddlers while in the hospital and the extras that they gave me to take home for the meconium poops, even though DH brought CD for baby to wear. I loved the swaddlebees for the first week or so, but they just leak like mad now. I didn't want to be a follower with the fuzzi bunz thing, but they have worked very well, I use them at night for my half asleep changes. I have a few sweet dream diapers that get the job done, but I like the fittedness of the diaperbabies with a cover. I would probably like kissaluvs also, but have no more diaper money... I think I'll be sticking to the fuzzi bunz for the most part. I have a few prefolds that come in handy if I am being lazy with laundry, but those are mostly for inserts.

I brought a dozen or so preemie prefolds and some XS very baby AIO's to the hospital, and some covers (precious beginnings fit PERFECT!) loveybums fit pretty well. The preemie prefolds are perfect on her (8 lbs) and she wasn't peeing much or anything at first, so they worked just fine to catch the meconium, and it's washed out no problems. At home I've been using prefolds mostly- I have some preemie I added extra layers to, which has been good as she's started peeing a lot more. Swaddlebees newborn fitteds are SO nice, and fit well. I have some pattynaps newborn basics that fit well also. That's pretty much all that's fitting under her cord. For covers, the nb nikky's fit well, under the cord, though the legs are a tad too loose (chicken legs!) but with a fitted on I don't worry about it. I'm loving the few wool soakers we have, too, they look so comfy....here are a few pics I've taken:

the preemie prefolds I still had to fold down a little in the back to get them under the cord. So cute!

The front back of one of her precious coverings covers- preemie prefold underneath. These are the absolute perfect fit- I'm SO glad I got them, I have 3. They are regular cut nb size.

Sara with my friends 3 week old- in a loveybums fleece cover- these are so soft! It fit ok under the cord, though it would do better once it falls off, it was kind of riding up.

one of the gazillion XS very baby's I made in my nesting craze. They fit under the cord alright, but it will be better once I can pull them up a little over her belly, I was kind of angling the tabs down and it was still rubbing the cord a little. These are really a nice fit, though, I'm glad since I have 24!

We have prefolds and flats, and we always reach for the prefolds first.

For covers, we have a couple of bummi-type covers and also some wool covers DH made out of recycled sweaters. The wool covers get way more wear. We are already planning to make more.

Yeah, he's pretty great. He also made us a wrap and a gorgeous reversible pouch.

When he was in grade 7, the boys were suposed to take shop and the girls home ec. DH grew up in intentional communities, including a working farm, so felt that he didn't really need shop. He insisted on taking home ec instead, and is now definitely the seamster in our family.

We are using most of DS#2's newborn stash. I haven't really bought anything new for DD#2's stash. I've got a friend who is starting a diapering business and she's made a couple of diapers for her. I don't have pictures of them up in "The Newborn Stash" yet.

Here's her stash.
The Newborn Stash.

Mainly we are using Tykies, BizzyBHives and Fairyland Creations. She is just so tiny (being only 7 pounds 4 oz at birth) that several of the diapers are still a little bit too big in the thighs yet (especially with her little chicken legs... where did those come from ... all my others had thunder thighs!!).

don't have a new babe to CD yet but with dd i used Huggies that someone gave me first to avoid meconium stains. then we jsut used preemie prefolds and bummi NB covers. she was tiny, just 6# 5 oz when we brought her home. prefolds and bummis make up the majority of our stash, we just love them. use a lot of wool soakers and longies too. thought i'd be a big fitted and fancy cover kind of Mama but find i like the utilitarian dipe even better. Do LOVE LOVE LOVE my pul side snap Very Baby covers though!! they are great under dresses or with just a t shirt!

can't wait til the new little one is here to CD!!

I thought I'd be digging the fitteds. But I'm all about prefolds right now. They are just so easy to use.

For those who use swaddlebees pockets - why do you think they leak so much? I have only one, but I made my own pockets that are very much like it and I am hoping it will not leak!! I made them wider them swaddlebees between legs, so hopefully they won't leak as much.

I have some small Swaddlebees but haven't used them yet. I think it's the stuffing you use. I use the Med for my 18 mo and don't have leaking issues unless there's not enough stuffin.

For now, prefolds are what I'm using most, a few fitted here and there too.

I haven't used swaddlebees, but Harleyz are another *very* trim pocket and I've used those a lot. I think when you have a trim pocket, it's important to be sure it's stuffed really well. I actually don't think I used them with newborns though, so I'm not sure if that helps.

No baby here yet, but I'm hoping to use a few inexpensive fitteds I found and also prefolds. Then, once he grows into them, the motherease one size.

Maybe I just don't have enough stuffins in them. I use the insert that came with it. I use the fuzzi bunz with either a thick prefold, or a thin prefold and an insert. It just doesn't seem like there is enough room in the swaddle to fit much more, as it is hard to just get the one insert in it...

im using sposies ds2 screeches when i put him in the flats.
Well I really like the NB size IPF's and my wool soakers I knitted. Unfortunately I don't have enough prefolds because the order I made a long time ago gave me too many smalls and not enough NB and I didn't realize it until I washed them for the first time. So I'm using sposies to fill the gaps until the new dipes come in the mail. I have some Bummis super whisper wraps but won't use those until the cord falls off.

Not in this DDC, but I was reading your replies because apparently I have newborn baby amnesia! I swear I cannot remember how tiny they are. My little bug will probably be under 7 lbs (DS was 6.6). Thanks to Vanilla for posting the pictures of her 8 pounder in the preemie prefolds. I have a few but was thinking they'd be too small, even on a 6+ pound baby. See? Amnesia.

My newborn stash consists of:

15 Kissaluvs 0
3 Valor Kids AI2s
2 KHW hemp
1 KHW ov
2 Mutt ov
1 Cherry Bomb Baby oc
2 Little Beetles ov
1 Firefly hemp small
1 Firefly oc small
12 Fuzzibunz small
24 prefolds
24 Fleece liners (we bought fleece, cut into strips)
15 asst longies & soakers

I brought the Kissaluvs, KHW's, Mutts and Fleece liners to the hospital. Was worried about meconium stain, but the worry was unnecessary - meconium washed right out of liners. **The olive oil I brought to hospital was indispensable - - we put it on babe's bum before he started pooping meconium, and every dipe change after - - it made the meconium a snap to clean off.**

The dipes I reach for first are the Kissaluvs - they're not very absorbant, but they're soft and stretchy (and seem more comfy). The others I reach for are the Valor Kids AI2's. They're very cozy dipes - wish I had bought more!

The Mutt ov's aren't as stretchy and are a bit tight around the babe's legs, so don't seem as comfy.

The KHW hemp are REALLY nice, actually - I would recommend these to other mamas, definitely.

The KHW ov is not as tight as the Mutts - I would recommend over the Mutts hands down.

The Cherry Bomb Baby I only used twice - it was SO tiny, babe was really too big for it from birth!

The Little Beetles I haven't used yet. They're a bit bigger than the others, so I'm saving for when babe outgrows the kissaluvs. Same goes for the small Fireflies.

Likewise, the FB's are too big still.

Haven't used the prefolds yet (as dipes, anyway), just cause I haven't had to.

At first, we used the dipes(sposies) leftover from the hospital and then those from my friend gave us. Since my milk came in, almost everytime she poops, she has a blowout. I got fed up this morning and used infant prefolds(fold the front to avoid her cord). The next time she pooped, it stayed completely in her dipe.

I have 36 infant prefolds and about 14 fitted. I'm waiting for her cord to fall off before using the fitted as i find them big.

I am DYING to bust into our huge stash of Kissaluvs, but the boys are still too small to fit into them well (skinny little legs). So, right now we're sinking a small fortune into Pampers Swaddlers. It's insane how much those little things cost!!!
