scary day - off topic

This is off topic, but it is so fresh to me, I wanted to write about it with other mommas. This is really the only MDC board I visit, so here it is:

Today was the scariest day of my life. My son (age 6) got lost at the mall. We went with my friend Lolo and her kids. DS wanted to go in Spencer's, but Lo didn't want her little one to go in there, so she was sitting on a bench in front of Spencer's and Hot Topic, which are side by side, and we were discussing where we were to meet up. I saw ds go into Hot topic, which he likes all the knick knack stuff they have in there, so I wasn't too concerned, we were sitting right in front of that store.

About 2 minutes later, I went into Hot Topic, but he wasn't there. So then I went into Spencer's, assuming he wandered in there. Nope. Back to Hot Topic; back to Spencer's. After I was sure I had not missed him in either store, I started to panic. Lo said she would walk by the Build-a-Bear place, and then go to the mall office and let them know. I walked down to the candy machines and carosel - not there. Now I am crying and yelling his name. Two women came up to me and offered to help, asking his name, age, what he was wearing. One said she would look at the food court, the other offered to contact security.

I am now in full fledged tears - it has been probably 10 minutes. The child is GONE. I started just screaming his name. More women came up and asked for a description of him and offered to help. As I was walking, a security guy on a little motor bike thing came up to me and said that they had him at the guest services desk. Someone saw him crying and took him there. He told them his name, my name, and what I was wearing (good boy!). I almost fainted with relief, seriously.

He said that when he walked out of Hot topic, I wasn't on the bench. I think I must have missed him the first time I looked and then went into Spencer's when he came out, and he started walking in the wrong direction to find me and got all mixed up. My heart is still hurting from this. I have never been so afraid in my life, I don't think. I couldn't keep the awful abductor thoughts out of my mind. But I have to say, the number of people who offered to help was wonderful, and more than anything, I do have a restored faith that people are inherently good. DS is safe with me now, and may never leave my sight again until he is 25.

That is soooo scary! I'm glad the little guy is ok and that he knew exactly what to do.

Very scary. Glad he was safe and sound. It's also nice to hear so many people were helping you out.

Oh, mama! I had that "daymare" the other day (laying in bed... not sleeping... mind wandering all over the place). I couldn't fall back asleep and I was just sobbing... and it wasn't even real!

I can't even begin to imagine what it was really like! I'm so glad he's safe and sound... and I bet he won't want to let you out of HIS sight until he's 25, either (or, at least 14).

I have those 'bad thoughts' too...and they are so emotionally painful that I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to actually think that it is HAPPENING! BIG HUGS to you momma...I'm so glad your sweet boy is safe with you tonight. I think we should all hug our babies one more time today...
My awful 'daymares' are of a car hitting my dd or a fire and I can't get to her or something...and then the pain of not having her anymore...it would be toooooo much!

Oh, you poor mama! That must have been so frightening...

But kudos to you for teaching your little boy what to do in that situation; he did so well to describe you.

Big to you all
