Wouldn't it be easier (and less controversial) if scientists just encouraged mothers to breastfeed, and to make breastmilk available to those who needed it (such as the children--ages unknown--referred to in the article)?

Wow. You're right, why spend all that time and money making the rice make the protiens when there is already a source for it?! And I wonder if anyone (other than us) reading about this or involved in the study will connect this with how awesome breastmilk itself is.

ETA: less controversial? I think not. Why, some by choice FF mothers would be horribly offended by the insinuation that they didn't do all they could for their kids' health!
