Henry's - :\

Today I went to a Henry's store (Same company as Wild Oats) and was wandering around the store forever. I was looking at items in the baby section, and noticed something I h ave never thought of before (it must have been the article in the new mothering mag!) The little sign to represent the baby isle had a big ol BOTTLE, a pacifier, a rattle, and..tissues (or something?). They only sell like 2 cans of formula, and no bottles or pacifiers. It just kinda made me : that even a Natural Food store like Henry's would symbolize the baby with a bottle, when they barely sell anything to do with bottles. Maybe the bottle was supposed to symbolize EBM, but still! I would have drawn a stack of diapers and a rattle, or maybe a small baby spoon.

And then when I asked a salesperson if there was a manager I could voice my opinion to she gave me a nasty look and said..
"You are actually going to complain about that?"
And I said "Yes mam.Why should the baby aisle be symbolized with a bottle when the natural way (we are in a natural foods store :P) to feed your baby is with the breast?"
"Well, I fed my baby with a bottle. I couldn't breastfeed!!!"
"Well...I am not proposing that they paint a boob on the sign! Maybe a stack of diapers or something."
"*grumble*..*stink eye*"

So I just kinda chatted about the breastfeeding rates in other countries where breastfeeding is assumed and walked away when she started to roll her eyes.

Hey lady, don't get mad at me. I was just trying to share some info. :P You didn't seem so grumpy when you were cooing at my baby.

It's ridiculous what companies use to signify babies these days.

I was at a local mall the other day, and was looking for a restroom. I happened to catch the sign for the Nursing Mother's Room, and do you know what the symbol for the Nursing Mother's Room was??

That's right. A bottle. Crazy, huh? A room - expressly designed for women and children who feed at the breast - being designated by a friggin' bottle. WTH?

Um, yeah & I'd also have a few word to say to that manager about the employee's attitude! :

Katie, I'm going to check my Henry's when I get home from Chicago. Or, were you at my Henry's? I'm going to make a complaint too! Hopefully what I have to say will have some kind of an impact, especially because I am a regular customer there and a lot of the employees know me.

I was bummed when I saw that they sold formula (Horizon and another natual or organic one), but they do have one or two things for breastfeeding there too (I know that they have the bm storage trays that make your milk into ice cubes).

It really is frustrating when you shop at a natural foods store and the employees know nothing about natural living. It's not true for all of the employees, but it is for most. I guess you just assume that since they're working in a store that seems to support a cruchy lifestyle, they would be pretty cruchy themselves too.

When you combine this with the fact that Wild Oats is covering up the Mothering magazine cover that shows a mama breastfeeding (see the other thread), it seems that this company has some issues that need to get resolved!!

I saw this thread, and it made me so angry! I'll be going in there soon to give them a piece of my mind!

Yeah, I nurse in there probably at least twice every visit, and no one has ever said a word. I'll have to ask them if they are offended and if they would also like to cover me with a black cover too!

You should definitely follow up with management and be sure to mention that employee's nasty attitude!

North Park? I went there this last weekend and saw the nursing room and, yep, there was a bottle. I was so disappointed. Next time Ezra wants to nurse I will purposely avoid that room just because of that and if anyone says anything I'll point out that it's for bottlefeeders. lol
