night weening my 17month

i feel that my son is able to make it through the night without nursing and i think he just does it out of habit cause for 17 months whenever he wakes up he finds my breast and latches on and goes right back to sleep well tonight is my 5th night of night weening. i have to say it has gone alright but each night has not gotten better which i thought it would ?the first night went awesome, my son sleeps with us and instead of nursing him back to sleep i have been trying to sing to him while i snuggle him and it does work but last night he would only stay asleep for a short time then wake up asking to nurse i realize its going to take a bit for him to get used to but i was wondering if anyone had a suggestions?? thanks

My personal feeling on this is that if they still wake at night to nurse then they need to. Maybe not for nutrition but for security. If you can get him back to sleep without nursing and other things work like singing and cuddling then go for it. Most of all tho you should go by his signals. If he insists on nursing then nurse him. It dosnt have to be all or nothing with nursing at night cutting back can make a huge difference if the child is ready. Since he only slept a short time and each time woke to ask to nurse that tells me that he needs to nurse at least once during the night.
