"Family Guy" show, anti-NIP comment on 7/16...

So a few days ago, Dh was flipping through channels on tv, and we get to the show "Family Guy" just in time to hear the dad make a comment like, "We don't breastfeed in public because that's wrong." Anyone else catch this? I didn't hear what was said before that, so I don't know what the subject at hand was, but my ears definitely caught that line!

I'm not a Family Guy fan -- I've seen it a handful of times in the past few years -- so I don't know if this was a re-run and the creators/channel has already been contacted about this. I didn't want to shoot off a not-so-friendly e-mail if it's an issue that's been addressed already.

knowing that show, if Peter was saying it, it means they're trying to say the opposite! so I'd actually take it as a PRO-nip statement.

Yes, Peter is a complete buffoon on that show - he represents pretty much everything which is wrong, uninformed, and ignorant about John Q Public. So I'd say that if Peter said it, it was later lambasted completely in the show. We watch it quite a bit but I missed that episode, so I don't know for sure.

Yup. Peter has said something anti-nip twice, but he's possibly the dumbest person ever born (if he were real anyways) so usually the things he says aren't supposed to be taken seriously. They are the opposite of what a normal person would say, ya know? He also says a lot of anti-woman comments but if you look at lois, being the strong, sensitive, do-it-all mother, who teaches piano on the side, runs for school board, ect, you will see that the show is not anti-woman. Same with the nursing issue. Lois nurses stewie and there have been a few positive nursing comments, plus one whole show about how she tries to wean stewie, then decideds not to. It was sweet. Peter is a dumbass. His character is supposed to represent all that is politically incorrect.

Plus, stewie is in cloth diapers half the time. You see him with a pinned diaper and sometimes they reference huggies. DH pointed it out. He said, "I'm confused, does lois use cloth diapers?" I said, "well she must at least part of the time!"

Agreed; generally speaking, Family Guy is a VERY pro-nursing show. I'm not sure of the episode in question, but I would put $10 on the fact that Peter's statement was probably followed by a montage that made it clear that he was being a buffoon.

I know what episode you're talking about. Peter had a skull he found in an ancient Indian burial ground and was doing all kinds of crazy stuff with it. At one point, he told Brian to stop breastfeeding the skull. Brian said something like "Huh?" and Peter rubbed the skull against Brian's chest, saying "Suck, suck, suck!" Brian said "That's just wrong." And Peter said something to the effect of "You're breastfeeding in public, which is wrong."

It was basically another way of showing that Peter's an idiot. One of the reasons I love FG is because it's very BFing-friendly. I've only seen a bottle on the show once - when Lois decided to wean Stuie (don't worry, she went back to BFing in the end!).

I adore the episode where Lois tries to wean Stewie. It is hilarious!

Yeah... no matter how many times he tries to "off her" he still can't resist "THEM"

Ahhh, okay, thanks guys! I would have felt stupid if I had sent an e-mail without knowing the full story.

I'm glad I posted here! Obviously I'm not very familiar with the show, LOL...a lot of our friends in college watched it, but I never really paid too much attention to it.

Cool, I'm glad I read this post. My little brother has been a big fan of this show for several years. I was surprised when I had dc#1 that he was so pro-bfing, since he is a single guy with little experience with babies. I bet the show had something to do with it! He has a few episodes on DVD, so I will have to ask him to borrow the one about Stewie weaning. That baby is pretty funny, but I'm not crazy about the rest of the show.

Yes...but Peter's wife nurses Stewie...their son. I don't think there is anything I can say that hasn't already been said...I love Family Guy!!

LOL, that's good that the mom breastfeeds! I'll have to watch for that whenever I happen to catch it again.

...and the best part is Stewie gets right up on her lap and opens her shirt...but they never show a nipple of course.

I love that show..
I know the episode you're talking about and I also interpreted it just like the previous posters- like that was definitely shown to be the moron's point of view.
They're very pro-nursing.

I'd love to know more about the show's creator- do any of you know if he is married? I'd be willing to bet his wife nurses their children... some of it's just pretty personal stuff you have to have btdt, ya know?

i'm another family guy fan. they're very pro-breastfeeding. when peter discovers his "inner woman" he tries to nurse stewie!
I think he's married -- I saw him interviewed on Letterman awhile ago, right about the time that Fox figured out that they'd cancelled the show when they shouldn't have (a boxed set of the episodes was released and just raked in the dough) .... I think his life is fodder for quite a bit of it, and he's got a lot of good writers on staff. They also get cameos from quite a few famous folks, too. I think that Al Gore's daughter works on the show .... and IIRC, Tipper and her daughter (the one with children) both bf'd.

My friend is a personal assistant to one of the writers. I will have to aks her if she feel they are pro-bfing. I am sure they are judging by the way they joke about it.

That one is so funny. It cracks dh up every time because I think he frequently wondered what the whole experience was like.

Yeah then Stewie wakes up, pulls a hair out his mouth, and shudders. LOL

There was an episode where Lois tried to wean him cause he kept biting. Stewie was acting like a crack addict hehe. And he snuck in when she was sleeping, pumped milk, and started to leave with it. He tripped and spilled it then was licking the milk off the carpet. When he finally got "off the stuff" she gave up and went back to nursing cause she missed it too much.

Don't worry, that "your breastfeeding in public and that's just wrong" was meant to be Peter being stupid. They have him say things like that to be dumb and controversial. Have you noticed all the racist and sexist stuff? It's sposed to be funny and his expense.
