Would you rip up this carpet? - Page 2

Kitchen carpet is a recipe for nastiness in my book too. I've seen some really nicely painted subfloor before. You'd be surprised!

well, we live in a town house and the bedrooms are upstairs. apparently, if you remove carpeting from the top floor, the noise bothers the neighbors and they can complain. even if we ignore that factor (which is hard to ignore actually because our neighbors will most likely complain), it is difficult for me or my partner to remove it ourselves. he has asthma and i have sinus-related problems. this is the reason why we are concerned about the baby - s/he may have allergies/asthma and we want to give her the best possible atmosphere given our situation. thanks for any helpful suggestions you may have...

If you all are allegic to dustmites, carpet in the bedroom is not ideal. I don't know if you have the money, but what about replacing the carpet with cork flooring? It is almost as quiet as carpeting and much better for people with dustmite allergies. . . .

It's not that noisy to pull up carpet or to pull up the particle board. really, unless you're using a sawsall and taking out the whole darned kitchen. I've done the task--taken out four layers of flooring and the subfloor, to find a nice, old wooden floor with old paint on it. After getting everything up (while my respiratory-impaired friend and I wore those cheap masks), I brought a sander (that part is noisy) in and cleaned out all the grit from the floor. now they're clean, washable, very nice kitchen floors. The carpet in your kitchen is probably causing a lot of problems for your family as well----If you let the neighbors know (I mean really, sometimes we have to do an occasional noisy repair in the house), I bet you're clear for an afternoon. With a fan in the window. Even if you're down to the wood floor and find out it's yucky, you can put the stick on tiles down for now until you can get to the crud later. If you try to paint on the particle board, it'll be a nightmare.

Oh! I thought she meant that once the carpet was up, the sound of feet on the floor would be loud.

An area rug would take care of that, as would walking without shoes.

I would rip it up, even if I had to wear a mask to do it, and even if I rented and would lose my deposit.

Carpets are disgusting.
