Making montessori-style letter cards with sand paper- Contact Cement?

I want to make those letter cards for tactile exploration of letter forms, but the site I found for instructions calls to use rubber cement or contact cement. I'm not sure about this stuff, or whether I want to use it on a play toy for my kids. Does anyone know how safe it is, or what other adhesives might work to stick the sandpaper letters to cardstock?
thanks

Could you try Elmer's Glue Stick? I've always loved the results when using glue stick and prefer it to any other adhesive. HTH

Will that be durable enough to glue sandpaper I wonder? I have glue sticks, but I don't think theyre' elmer brand. Maybe I will try it though.

I would think you could use more or less depending on the sandpaper you use. I used to make my own holiday cards with cardstock and elmer's glue sticks. I only suggested Elmer's because I've found theirs to be better quality, same with Crayola. I would add a little more glue than just a thin coat.

Good luck. Post the results when you're finished. Did you die cut all your sandpaper letters? We made these when I taught kindergarten and the kids loved them.

So far so good, and it turns out on of my sticks is elmer's. I'm just drawing block letters and cutting with scissors. So far so good, except I forgot to draw "G" backwards, so when I cut it out it was wrong.

How do I die cut?

How did they turn out?

When I taught, die cutting enabled us to cut lots of shapes, letters, designs quickly. Some scrapbookers now have access to die cutting machines that allow for putting together layouts quickly and neatly.

I um... haven't gotten back to doing them. The "A" seems to be holding up though.

You can also cut the letters out of sandpaper, if you don't need them on cards-
