What will it take to educate parents!!

Thread Starter
I started a new job as a server this week and I saw another table with a brand new baby...less then 2 weeks old been fed with a bottle propped in her car seat.
I wanted to grabbed that baby and hold it!!!
I mentioned in passing to my trainer how that breaks my heart..and she said with a confused look on her face, "What?"
I said, "Bottle propping. It breaks my heart, just hold the baby for goodness sake. Then again I never used bottles."
Trainer."I bottle feed but I also had to work 4 weeks after my dd was born."
Me: "I'm soo sorry, I can't imagine what that would be like. I'm grateful I'm still nursing my 18 month old. I figure its a built in nutrional suppliment."
Trainer interupts: "Formula is just as good......."
I then run off before my face turns red and I offend my trainer and go to the restroom to cool off.

That's too bad. I really can't stand to see bottle propping. Babies are meant to be held!

2 weeks old???!!! That's dangerous! The baby could choke to death on the fomula dripping into his/her mouth.

I don't know anyone who defends bottle propping, especially in a newborn.

*eyeroll*

Why do they all say "Formula is just as good" when ALL of the research indicates otherwise? To make themselves feel better? If you're going to defend a decision, have some facts at your disposal. No one is going to lie to you to make you feel better about a poor choice.

They may not lie to you...but proponents for formula will convince those that bottle feed that formula is "an agreeable substitute" They can never say it is just as good but they can say "it has an identicle makeup to breastmilk". So if it's identicle and an agreeable substitute then it MUST be the same and just as good. I mean, really, WHAT is the difference? People are so "agreeable to being hood-winked don't you think?

Even if formula was just as good, bottle propping is never okay. Hold your d@mn baby! :

do de do...

Well, of course the formula companies are going to try to convince you it's just as good, even better... because they want you to buy their product! When are people going to learn to trust facts, not retailers? In any case, people should know better than to prop a bottle up in ther babies mouth. It's on warning labels all over the place, from formula cans to bottle packaging. It's an obvious 'no no,' just like putting baby to sleep with a bottle--yet people are too lazy to heed the warnings. Babies need not only to be fed but also held. I don't understand why people don't see that.

I work at a kiosk in the mall and see babies of all ages in their carseat/stroller things being pushed around with their bottles propped all day long - It drives me crazy! :

No one can truthfully say that formula has an identical makeup to breastmilk any more than they can say that it's just as good. There are so many profound differences between formula and breastmilk it's not even funny, let alone "identical!"

right...but they do...seen any formula ads (tv or magagzone) lately? I just saw one in the dentist's office just last week in parenting mag. "even though breast is best, but if you choose to use formula, use X (because I cannot remember what brand it was....Elizabeth Hasselback was in the ad) because it is as close as you can get without being breastmilk. My freind told me she saw a new formula touting it's ability to prevent tooth decay.

Whatever soothes the conscience. I mean we all know it's the marketing that targets women who choose (and I'm not talking about women here who can't or are/were unable to BF) not to BF. We all know it's BS....we all know what kind of arguments go around the pro-BF and the pro-formula circuits. Those formula companies will do anything to pit mom against mom on this issue. It's all in the dollar.

: how dumb...well maybe they will invent one that actually straps to the baby's head...you know, so they can't spit it out and mom doesn't have to keep putting it back....
