ovarian cysts

Just wondering if anyone has any insights, suggestions, experience...

I have had painful ovarian cysts in my last 2 pregnancies (thought to be simple, fluid-filled sacs). Some of them ruptured during my 2nd pregnancy, some ruptured during that birth (yes, ouch). U/s ~6 wks pp that time showed smaller/fewer cysts than during that pg, and pp, things were pretty uneventful (ie, no pain). I had somewhat smaller/fewer cysts this last time around, but still painful. No rupturing during the pg or birth. And now... I've had pain (from what I *know* are the cysts) pretty much since a month or so pp. I didn't mention it at my 6 wk pp visit, in part because it was pretty minor at that point, and in part because I figured it would just fade away (it hasn't; it's intensified). I'm a little surprised/annoyed that they are "active" now; they haven't been like this outside of pg before. (Also, I had what seemed to be my first pp AF at ~6 1/2 wks pp--much, much sooner than after my 1st 2 kids--and I think my *other* ovary may have ovulated a week or so ago.)

I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do. If I see my ob, I think we'll probably just do another u/s (I've had many over the past few years, last one at ~35 wks in the last pg), and we'll be saying, "Yes, there they are." We'll count them, measure their diameter, maybe discuss (yet again) the possibility of surgery if she thinks they're too big or if I think they're too painful.

Anyone?

quick for tonight, and if I have time, I'll elaborate if you need it tomorrow. I had HORRIBLE cysts that weren't polycystic ovaries for a very long time. I had bad pain, had surgery to remove some of them that got dangerously large, etc. The docs really didn't have answers, so I did reading on my own and found that diet can really, really help. Look into a hypoglycemic diet and try to follow it religiously. Only complex carbs, which means no processed flours or sugars, several small meals spaced close together (my ideal ratio is 6-10 grams of protein with 35-45 grams of complex carbs every 1.5-2 hours, for instance...when I'm NOT preggo or nursing). Following this like a fanatic completely obliterated the cysts and other problems that I had, too. Really, it worked for me. In the end, it was talking to a doc who specialized in female pelvic pain who had done studies on nutrition and female pelvic pain that cemented my will to follow the diet. To that point, all the docs had been able to offer was hormones, hormones, and more sucky hormones. They just made me sicker. This really worked. Good luck!

I've heard that castor oil packs can do wonders. Try Herbal Healing for Women from Rosemary Gladstar. It's a great book.

Yeah, I guess I forgot to say that this is not PCOS at all. I'm intrigued by the suggestion on the diet (and the reading)--do you have any suggestions/links/etc from your own journey, courtenay_e? (You can PM me anything you want, too.) I eat a pretty darned good diet already (and a lot of small, frequent meals anyway, because I'm nursing and I get crabby if I don't eat frequently). Wouldn't hurt to look into it more. I think I actually may have that herbal book... duh, I guess I should at the alternative health stuff I have on my bookshelf.
