What will it be like to visit The Farm?

Before I get pregnant again, I would really like to visit The Farm and see if I would like to give birth there. It's a four-hour drive - otherwise it would be a no-brainer.

I'm really intimidated to visit, though, because I look, well, I don't look the part. My hair has highlights, I tend to wear some make-up and my clothes often come from the Gap sale rack because it's easy. : I'm afraid I'll feel uncomfortable once I get there, after having subjected my nursling to a four-hour car trip.

Can anyone tell me what it's like and how they felt about arriving as an outsider, and how an outsider who looks a little more yuppie than she really is might be received?

I am going there next month and I am wondering the same thing. I told my DH I have to buy a new (old) car and new (old) clothes, LOL.

Although I have spent a little time at a commune here where I live and it was definitely an anything goes environment. They didn't seem to bat an eye at me in my Gap skirt. I am hoping it's whats inside that counts

I hope you enjoy your visit. I am counting the moments until mine.

My guess would be that the people on The Farm are not judgemental of outward appearances. From what I've read, plenty of "normal" people have gone down there and it wasn't until living there for a while that they "changed". They'll probably just smile at you knowing that you'll change a little bit too eventually I think its wonderful you're planning on making that trip. My MW did some of her training there and met Ina May :

I do know that the Farm is shortstaffed as far as midwives go, so if you choose to birth there, it's a good idea to book into care the minute you have a BFP!

I wouldn't worry about your clothes or hair, I'm sure they won't.

I'm friends with someone who grew up there. Her mom is one of the midwives and she still goes back home often.

She's very down to earth, not at all hippie (even has implants), and a vegetarian.

I don't think you have to check your penny loafers at the door.

If you'v heard of Ina May Gaskin... it's "her" place, though not really, since it's a commune.

Welcome to MDC!

I got the same impression too.

I would really love to read about your experiences if you visited/gave birth on The Farm.
