Do You Get Fat Eating NT?

I understand the whole theory behind eating healthy fat, like butter etc, and that it doesnt make you fat, BUT I was just wanting to hear from anyone who has followed this for a longish period and could tell me for sure.:
Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question:

It's not a dumb question at all! There is a NT thread that is recent on weight issues too. IMO you have to drop those processed carbs (flour/sugar) to lose weight. In other words, don't eat SAD and then add lots of butter on top of it. There are some moms here who only started losing weight eating high-fat (60% daily intake)

There is also an NT book called EAT FAT, LOSE FAT by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig.

I just wanted to pop in and say that I have been eating NT style for several years now and am still very thin, like always.

DH and I both lost the last bit of our weight eating NT. We moved to small meals more often which helped both DH and I lose 30 lbs. After we switched to NT, I lost 15 lbs more and DH lost 25 lbs more.

I had to go to the smaller meals because I was suspecting a blood sugar issue, which the doctors couldn't diagnose or detect with tests -- I would get very, very cranky when I got hungry, and going to smaller meals seemed to help even out my blood sugar. Moving to NT has made me completely stable in mood. I've also stayed at the same weight for about 6-9 months now.

BTW -- DH and I didn't move to NT at the same time (he was about 9 months behind me), but I could tell that we both plateau-ed in weight, and then when we respectively moved to NT, we lost more weight.

I noticed the most difference when we cut out the refined grains. We still eat grains, but we only do brown rice and other whole grains. We soak our grains as much as possible. When we eat out, if we can't get whole, we do without grains. I only started using coconut oil 4 months ago although I was already using a lot of butter. I also recently started saving my bacon grease and using that. My weight has not changed other than the regular couple of lbs fluctuation through the month and I always weigh the same as what I weighed the same time the previous month. Not only does the added oils not cause weight gain, it also helps fend off sugar cravings.

I eat at least 60% fats and have lost 25 pounds since starting NT. I don't restrict calories in any way. I do occasional exercise. I wrote more in the other thread...

According to the metabolic typing diet book you can get fat if you eat foods that are not appropriate for your metabolic type. NT is not generally geared towards any type of diet (based on ratio of macronutrients), but to many it has meant a reliance on high-protein/fat. Maybe we're all pretty racially similar (in regards to the theory that your ancestors' diet determine your nutritiion requirements), so this kind of diet just appears to be working for everyone (I know it does for me and dh), but do spend some time trying to figure out what sort of ratio works for you. Even though you may be from northern descent, you may still need a carb-based diet based on other factors beside genetic predisposition. There's a questionnarie in the book that helps you figure out your metabolic type. But you can use your own intuition as well.
But to answer your question, a traditional diet will not make you fat per se. However, traditional foods obviously mean different things to different people, depending on what's traditional for them.

kmamma, which metabolic typing book are you talking about? I've been reading Metabolic Man: Ten Thousand Years from Eden and it's fascinating. Is that the one you have?

I followed NT for the past 8 or 9 years. I found that I didn't lose weight, but my health improved and when I was pretty strict on NT, I would never catch colds or flu, even though my diabetes supposedly compromises my immune system. I was eating whatever I wanted, but in NT style, including desserts.

When I found a doctor who follows NT, he encouraged me to reduce carbohydrates and stop taking my blood pressure medication, and take less insulin. I still eat properly soaked/soured grains, but only once or twice a day now. I limit desserts, mostly the raw ice cream made with only 1/4 the amount of sweetening in the recipe. Otherwise, I don't limit calories or fat. My protein intake is moderate, probably 6 to 8 ounces of meat/poultry/fish or cheese daily, plus lots of raw milk.

I started eating this way in April, and have lost 20 pounds without trying. I'm still above where I would wish to be (in my dreams!) but I accept that my natural healthy weight is probably higher than the fashion ads or those weight charts would indicate.

People report that NT will put you at your healthiest weight -- if you need to gain, you will, and if you need to lose, you will.
