How do you know when your scoby and kefir grains are dying or dead?

What are the signs that they are fading or just plain "done"?????



I only ask because I want to know what to look for if it ever happens, since this is my first attempt at making it all!

The kefir grains will stop making the brew in the time you expect them to, or stop making it at all. One of my friends managed to killed the kefir grains I gave him after the first brew and they didn't make kefir after two weeks of changing the milk. They are definitely dead.

I don't have enough experience with my kombucha yet to tell how the SCOBY behaves when it is dying. I've read though that when the mother gets real dark and starts tearing easily is time to retire it.
