Temping to predict onset of labor?

I've read that you can take your temperature every morning to predict the onset of labor, just like you can temp your cycles to try to get pregnant or avoid pregnancy. Does anyone know more about this, and does it work?

My temps have been 97.7-97.8 every morning. This morning it was 97.2, but the heat was down, and I woke up early. I think a temp drop of about .5 is supose to predict the onset of labor within 24 hours. I'll let you all know if I have the baby by tomorrow.

Wow! Cool. Never heard of it, but what a concept. Can't wait to hear if it works. Good luck!

Still waiting. My temp went back up to 97.8-97.9

Today my temp was 97.4, and it stayed that way for an hour while I layed in bed. The last time it was low it creaped up. We'll see what happens.

....update 3/27/03.....temp back up to 97.8..........but I didn't sleep for 3 hours........doesn't seem to be working for me.

I just had a friend ask me about this and wondered if there was any correlation between basal body temperature and going into labour. Where did you read about this? I would be interested if there really was a correlation. My labours are fast and it would be very helpful to have some idea as to when it's going to happen...

hmmm...the only time I've ever heard about temperatures predicting labor was when my dad was breeding dogs and mentioned to my mom that he'd read that a pregnant dog's temp will go down before the onset of active labor. My mom's answer was "yeah, that's probably about the time the contractions get so intense that she starts panting through them." Sure enough that was the case.

I'd like to read more about BBT and predicting labor, though. Where did you read this?

I have never heard anything about this but it seems perfectly logical.
