Im reading Orson Scott Cards Homecoming series "The Memory of Earth" and there's a chapter describing boys rites of passage and... circumcision... *sighs*

Hopefully he's no prophet...

love and peace.

I love his work, but he does seem to mention circ a lot.

I can never get a read on whether he is advocating it or critiquing... or neither. It's always so neutral - but still so frequent. I guess since it's never clear, we can assume his opinion isn't all that strong?

We should email him and ask!

Well it appears in Ender's game that being circ'ed it out of the norm..... But Homecoming makes it seem as if it is the Norm. So I will take it as he has no real oppinion on it regarding advocation. Its part of our lives now, so using it in literay isnt a bad thing I suppose

I just wonder why it's mentioned so often by him, and specifically if the frequency of mention is supposed to say something...

And then, if so - what?

from what i know(which actually isn't that much ) is that OSC is pretty darn religious...so i think this reflects in his writtings.(old school bible...ya know?!!)

John Irving is another writer who seems to be obsessed with circ (or at least Urology). The Cider House rules opens with a circumcision, and the Water Method Man opens with a cystoscopy.

Well, but I've heard him blast religion in some interviews... I took it that he was raised in the bible belt, but rejected the views.

He's LDS. And, the Homecoming series in particular is supposed to be a re-imagining of the Book of Mormon.
