autism

I am scared that my 23 month old son may be autisic. I have read some things on it and he matches some but 2 ppl 1 a dr just told me he will be fine, he will catch up on some things and the other stuff they don't know.. He is super super super smart(it's unbelievable I don't know who I should talk to or anything.. if any of you caould please help me out any please do..



here is some things:

he screams for no reason I mean out of the blue sometimes he laughs fo no reason sometimes(he does smile) the only kid he will play with is a 7 y/o and that is sometimes b/c he rather play by himself.

He is extra extra clingy to me.. My mom was concerned about that.. Not the normal either I mean I leave the room or take the dog out he will scream loud.


He is very very very smart.. Alot smarter then most kids his age. (we have a lady from new mothers relief thro the Navy who said that) but he is way behind on talking like he should(which i read is a sign) and I am just worried and I found out todaymy husband is too. He has dr.s Wed. maybe they can help or maybe we will have to get refered to a specialist..

ya he is. He will be 2 Aug. 8..

millitary kids so they have to be vaccinated ecspecially since in 2008 we move to Japan

I am sorry you are worried about him... Just so you know for future... You dont have to VAX to go overseas.. We are also MIL and DS is not Vaxed and we use to live in England...

I'm not sure how it works at military hospitals but tell your pediatrician your concerns, push for a referral for an evaluation. The worst thing you can do is wait because there are a lot of work that people can do with children. Before you get into all of that though, get some tests done . . . does he have other problems? Sensory issues, intestine stuff (leaky bowels, etc), any allergies?

Yeah, as mentioned above, military kids don't have to be vaccinated, even to go overseas.

no intestinal stuff that has been found..

he was premature if that helps by 5 wks.. he has an allergy to Latex

Well that's good anyhow. You might want to read up on Spirited Children . . . he could be an extreme introvert with some language delay of some sort. My friend's son isn't talking and going to speech therapy, she was happy to find out that he isn't in any autistic, just delayed with language. It's frustrating for the parents and the child, but he's signing some now which is counted as language and getting a few words. The trick is early intervention! Best of luck.

Like someone else said, it might be different in military hospitals, but most places if you can get your pediatrician to refer you, Early Intervention will come and do an eval on any kid under 3 where there are concerns about speech or development or anything. They don't diagnose autism, but they see how the kid is doing, if they think they need extra help and all that.

And definitely check out the Vax forum. I just lurk, but I've learned soooo much useful info!

are you talking about birth to 3?

He is in that a lady comes here to help him in his speach.. She hasn't been here in a few wks tjho she broke her ankle

I'm not an expert, but that doesn't sound like autism to me. There'd be other things that you'd notice as well: he'd struggle with the intimacy of eye contact, and would need the routine.

Yeah, that was what I meant. I think they call it by different names in different places.

ya he has had his hearing checked..

I took a test a friend(whos son has something like Aspgars or somethin) and it said Aden has moderate PDD(i have to look that up)

Does he show you things, like bring you a toy, and does he make eye contact? Those would be good signs that he doesn't have autism.

My good friend's son has PDD, with early intervention, they're getting him potty trained, learning to interact (willingly with others), talk more (although he's still delayed but trying), and he gets tons of work with PT (physical therapy) and OT (occupational therapy) on top of the speech.

Just make sure you get your little boy evalutated.

My son is 3 yrs old and was also a preemie. He was just dx'd with autism. There were a lot of things "not right" with Evan from birth. He didn't make great eye contact- sometimes would get a very blank stare. Horrible sleep patterns- even now. He doesn't respond to his name. The list goes on.

And he is high functioning.

Get a referral to early intervention to have your son evaluated. Be aware, however, there are some professionals who are hesitant to dx autism at this young of an age- some of the behaviors might wane away- he might just be a late bloomer. As he gets older, the behaviors become more concrete and autism is easier to dx. I wouldn't take the chance though- get the referral.

we got a referal from the dr today we are getting Aden evaluted
