I asked a friend who is Catholic, he has no idea, and didn't know what was in his vax until I told him. I was just wondering because they get a lot of press when they take stances like this, and if they know about it, I would think it would have been in the media at some point.
Here's my understanding, as a Catholic. The Church teaches that the intentional taking of an innocent life any time between fertilization and natural death is objectively evil. This is why stem cell research and abortion at any stage are prohibited; IVF has the same issue with creating "disposable" embryos, plus others related to the marriage relationship and spouses "right and duty to become parents solely through one another."
The original abortions, however they happened, were objectively evil, and whoever participated in them with full knowledge and consent committed a grave sin. But one's "participation" in the activity at decades' remove is only extremely indirect, and doesn't cause any further harm. At this point, if I refused a vaccination, I would be refusing a good for myself and society without in any way mitigating the evil involved in the initial creation of the vaccine. (Note that I am taking for granted that the vaccine is safe and effective, not because I think everyone thinks so, but because the whole ethical discussion would be moot if it weren't - there would be no reason to make or receive it at all).
If each dose or batch of the vaccine required the intentional abortion of a new baby, IMo it would clearly be immoral to receive it, because refusal to receive could mitigate an ongoing evil.
Here's an explanation in more formal theological language:http://www.immunize.org/concerns/furton.pdf
Or, by analogy, is it immoral to drive a Volkswagen? Or to live in a house built by slaves in the 19th century? Are you participating in the Holocaust, or in slavery, by doing so?
And whoever thought that the Church took money from the vaccine industry to approve it - I'd like to know when and where and between whom you think that meeting took place. And also why the Church hasn't gone ahead and taken money from the contraceptive industry, or abortion clinics, in exchange for approving of their products? After all, every contraceptive device and medication maker could chip in, instead of the makers of just a couple of vaccines.
