I havent tried oatmeal to boost supply and am now needing all the help I can get. I have a call into the pharmacy about compounding some Dom and have been on Reglan in the beginning for a wk. For me my supply is always on the lowish side and usually have to supplement 4-8 oz daily of formula. She is almost 12 wks. I, wondering what kind of oatmeal people eat and how much. Im not crazy about regular oatmeal or instant but love oatmeal cookies and also the oatmeal breakfast bars. Is there enough in there to help. Any other oatmeal suggestions?

For anyone that has used beer to help is there a particular brand??? I know there are alot of opinions on this but Im all about whatever works so please no flaming.

TIA<

Guiness is apparently miraculous. Definitely worth trying. Good luck to you.
Cheers!

I have a bowl of oatmeal every day while I'm nursing, sometimes two. I would think you'd need quite a few breakfast bars to equal the same amount of oatmeal in a bowl, you know? Oh, and I also take red raspberry leaf capsules every day.

Not a beer drinker, so I don't know about that. Good luck!

anyone else with advice???????????

If you decide to try beer, drink it only when you think your child might be done nursing for a couple of hours. Alcohol can inhibit letdown, and if you're drinking it to increase your supply, that's the last thing you need.

Thanks! Does it matter what kind of beer??
Yes it does matter what kind of beer. It is the hops that increases milk flow and I believe I've heard it makes for an easier let down. I am lucky enough to live in Oregon where we have many excellent microbrews. I think IPA has the most hops. You don't want to drink cheap, domestic beers for this.

Also, eating a lot of raw greens seems to help for me.

Ferra,
What does IPS stand for??? OMG I must be getting old as I can barely think of a good import.

I will give the green veggies a try.

dont forget to keep your fluids up... drink lots of water. fennelgreek herb has anecdotal benifits, but can be an allergy for some

??

I hope you don't mind my asking, but what is leading you to think your milk supply is low? ( I know its off topic as you were originally asking about oatmeal )
Factors that have lead up to this conclusion can help and/or hinder your success at this rate, that is why I ask.

A dear friend who is both Irish and a midwife swears by Guinness.

I eat at least one bowl of oatmeal a day. And don't forget oatmeal in muffins, oatmeal cookies...mmmmm, cookies.:

Yes, worked for me. They are really junk food in disguise but the oatmeal component could help your milk supply. Try oatmeal cake, oatmeal cookies or even an apple crumble with an oatmeal topping!

low supply

Lact~
I normally have to supplement 4-8 oz daily. Some of the things I have tried are feeding/pumping, fenugreek, reglan. In the past three months Ive only been totally full(hard 2-3 times. Babe also lost down from 8'1 to 7" before starting to supplement. Im a SAHM and we seem to feed nonstop. This is also the longest that I have been able to nurse. I just want to do what I can to increase. I havent tried domperidone YET. Any suggestions?

Drink ALOT of water. This seems to help me. Also, are you getting enough rest? I know, , we're moms, we're never rested!!

This might sound silly to some, but have you tried visualization/meditation? For example, imagine that your breasts are very full, and milk is flowing out of them?

About the oatmeal--I don't know if there's a difference milk-suply wise, but I really LOVE the McCann's steel-cut oatmeal. My parents always bought Quaker rolled oats when I was growing up, and I always thought I didn't like oatmeal. Once I tried McCann's, I was hooked!

Any kind of oatmeal should do the trick, but some swear that the 'real deal' is more effective than the instant. I've found that oatmeal in any form can be effective.

The reason why oats in general are a galactogogue is because they contain choline, a substance which is an important component of breastmilk as well as an essential part of its manufacture and transport. You can find choline in other foods as well -- other grains, leafy green veggies, egg yolks. You can also take a supplement called lecithin (which is good for plugged ducts as well).
