This is the elephant in the room – the big conflict of interest.

Of course there's no conflict of interest. They don't let that money influence them in any way. Who would do such a thing?

The reporter wants to ask follow up question about the perception problem, about Dr. Nissen’s observation that the practice of having industry people like Dr. Gottlieb in positions of authority at the FDA is perpetuating the problem – in fact is an integral part of the problem.


But NPR reporter Prakash wouldn’t allow the follow up.


“I think we should move on,” she says

Why do "they" never cease to amaze me?!?!? I found the following little tidbit in an article on Gottlieb...

Wall Street likes the appointment of Gottlieb, 33, who believes in faster drug approval and fewer news-release warnings to the public about potential side effects of drugs.

But some medical experts are shocked by his July 29 appointment, coming at a time when the public is increasingly concerned about the safety of popular medicines. In addition, the federal government has just begun scrutinizing the growing financial ties between Wall Street firms and doctors researching new drugs

Dr. Gottlieb used to work at the American Enterprise Institute and he authored a column called the Forbes/Gottlieb Biotech Investor.


And he had a blog called the fdainsider.com – since shut down.
