Sewing machine help

I'm pretty clueless with my machine. It is second-hand and I don't have the manual; here are the instructions for threading. I just pulled the machine out for the first time since we moved. I managed to wind the bobbin and thread the machine, but when I try and actually sew, it only makes maybe 1/2" of stitches, and then the needle comes unthreaded. I tried fiddling around with stitch size & tension, but I really don't know how that would affect anything. Any ideas? I finally got to work on my unfinished project, have it all pinned, and now I'm stuck!

Have you tried turning the needle around?

I tried -- I had a hard time telling if it was turned or not, and it seemed that it only wanted to go in one way. Threading the needle front to back instead of back to front seemed to fix it, though.
