Ok, I want to try this out. What do I use for my heat source? How long do I apply heat?
TIA

I'm not sure what you want to emboss or if we're talking about the same thing but...
For paper I've used this thing called the "ShapeBoss" by Fiskars from Wal-mart. It has templates with designs cut out-like stencils. But there are 2 of the same template-you put the paper in between and press down on the design with a blunt edged pen or something similar-like the end of a small paintbrush.
And that's it-no heat for this-you have a cute design "pressed" into the paper. You turn it over so the design is raised for cards or whatever. This would work the same for soft metal-like copper or aluminum I suppose.
I've used this on cards and invites and it's very cool and EASY.
My SIL is getting into the other type of embossing with the special ink raised on the paper-that does require heat-she has a special "heat pen" but I don't know much about this.
Good luck,
Ann

I never knew there was another kind, lol. I am looking for info on the one that uses inks.

I did a bit a few years back, with ink and a powder you sprinkle on it - I held my cards over a toaster (not too close) to get the heat to melt the powder....

Sorry I am a little late here but. I use an actual embossing gun. I bought it at Michael's for 7.50 I think with a 50% coupon they put in the Sunday paper. I don't have an actual time for you when you emboss but you can definately tell when it is ready. I use tinted Top Boss embossing ink and I rubber stamp. There are also embossing pens where you could color in a stencil or simply write or draw. Then, I sprinkle it with embossing powder. You must heat it right away or the ink dries and the powder blows away when you use the gun. It blows hot air like a really hot hairdryer. You can definately tell when it is done because the powder melts and you get the raised effect. HTH. Good luck.
