Okay, I've been using EcoBags fruit/vegetable/grain bags to store fresh vegetables in the refrigerator for the last couple of weeks. My usual strategy is to mist them with a little water and then put them in the crisper. So far so good, for the most part. But....I traveled a bit (four days) last weekend and otherwise took a little too long to get back to some of the produce, and a couple of the bags have mildew spots.
I sprayed them with some Bac-Out before washing (cold wash) and hanging to dry, but of course the stains are still there. I guess I have three questions:
What do I need to do to make sure the mildew is dead?
Is there any way to get mildew stains out of cloth?
How should I wisely use cloth bags in the fridge? [Damp, or not damp? Add something (like tee tree oil?) to the sprayer I use to moisten them? Is there a reasonable limit I should be following as to how long they stay in the fridge?]
I'm happy to use cloth rather than plastic, both when picking up produce from the grocery store and when using produce from our weekly farm basket (none of which comes in plastic bags, anyway), but I'd like to do it smartly and evidently I'm off to a bumpy start. Your feedback is most welcome!
